The Wagner Rotary Club met for the first time since October 2020 at the Clubhouse on Main Street last Wednesday, March 10, 2021. This was almost a year to the date when meetings were canceled indefinitely last year as the COVID-19 Pandemic began to spread across the country.

“Random Acts of Kindness” week was from February 14-20 and here in Avon there was a week full of fun. Everyday of the week there was a small act of kindness that was encouraged. For staff, Monday was “give a coworker a thank you note for something they have done recently.

CHEERLEADERS SELLING CRUSH POPS

Every February the Avon Cheerleaders go around selling “Crush Pops” for a dollar as a fundraiser for Valentine’s Day. The cheerleaders hand out little sheets of paper with cute Valentine sayings on which students can write their name and to whom they would like to give a pop.

Megan Jo Soukup, daughter of Shirley and Troy Soukup, was born on August 25, 2003. She has two brothers, Cody and Trenton and one sister Ashley. Her favorite subject in school is her college class “Lifespan Development” through SDSU.

Every year the cheerleaders, under the guidance of Cheer Coach Becky Haenfler, prepare a Little Pirate Cheer Camp for elementary and junior high students to learn cheer skills and experience what it is like to be a cheerleader.

STUDENTS EARN AWARDS AT ANNUAL SCIENCE FAIR

On February 16, Avon freshmen, junior high, and sixth-graders participated in Science Fair in the auxiliary gym. The Science Fair was open to the public from 7:00-8:00 p.m. Awards were held at 8:00 p.m.

There is no better place to celebrate America’s birthday than Mount Rushmore, surrounded by the beautiful Black Hills and in the presence of four iconic American leaders. Last year, we brought fireworks back to Mount Rushmore for the first time in more than a decade.

Jim and Shirley Yonkers drove to Yankton last Tuesday where Shirley had a dental appointment. They had supper at a Chinese restaurant. Beth Namminga was a visitor from Tuesday until Saturday in the home of her son, Jeff, Crystal, Jasmine, Sydney, Addison and Andrew Namminga of Pella, Iowa.
