THE IHANKTONWAN LEARNING CAMP!

The Learning Camp is coming soon! The dates are Monday July 11 through Friday July 15. Several volunteers from Maryland are returning. Many Yankton Sioux and other children have attended the Learning Camp before. Free breakfast and lunch will be provided. Breakfast is served 8:30 to 9:30. The classes begin at 9:30 and dismissal is at 2:30 PM, Monday through Thursday and 1 PM Friday. There will be a later dismissal time and special activities involving horses for those who have completed 6th through 10th grade. The horse activities will be led by Hehaka and Perry Little. On Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday at 10:30 AM, Allen Hare will lead all of the grades in drumming, dancing and singing. JoMarie Garcia will teach the children about making good decisions. Reverend Jerry Zephier will work with all ages about spirituality. Robin Bissell, the camp leader since its beginning in 2010, says “We are excited to have these very generous community leaders come to join us and are looking forward to learning ourselves.” Volunteers from Maryland will teach lessons in math, reading, art and music and lots of fun and games. The Learning Camp is free and open to the public.

CHARLES MIX COUNTY LAKE RESTORATION ORGANIZATION JULY 3RD RIB FEST

The Charles Mix County Lake Restoration Organization (CMCLRO) will hold a Rib Fest on Sunday, July 3rd this year at the Bull-O-Rama grounds on the southwest edge of Lake Andes. The Rib Fest is planned in conjunction with the fireworks display to be presented by the Lake Andes-Ravinia Fire District. CMCLRO typically holds a fund raising and informational dinner each year in March, but the annual event has been sidetracked the past couple of years due to COVID. Now the CMCLRO Board has decided to alter the status quo and hold the July event. The July 3rd event will be picnic style, so attendees are encouraged to bring their lawn chairs and other picnic items. Participants in the RibFest will offer their specialty ribs in competition style event with the winner receiving a $500 prize, second place receiving a $350 prize and the third-place finisher receiving $150. Soft drinks, beer, pulled pork and other minimal side dishes will be served at the event in addition to the ribs. The food will served provide musical entertainment until 9:30 p.m., with the Lake Andes/Ravinia Fire Department's fireworks display concluding the evening. Admission to the event is free, but tickets will be sold for the food and beverages and of course all donations are welcomed. All are welcome and encouraged to come to the event to support CMCLRO. The proceeds for the event will be used to fund the project of the CMCLRO.

Living in a small town, we are often inclined to see change in our community as a threat to ourselves and our way of life. When we feel threatened by change uncertainty rears its ugly head and our negativity often takes over. We say things like – “What’s wrong with the way we’ve always done it.” or “Why do we need something new, the old one’s just fine?” or “We can’t afford that.” or “That will never work, we’ve tried it before.” And, sometimes we just outright disguise our negativity as facts, experience, or helpful guidance.

On Monday, June 20, Wagner traveled to White Lake to take on the Kimball-White Lake teeners. The 14Us would get off to a rough start as they fell behind 6-1 in the first inning. They would battle back, however, but would come up short by a count of 9-8.
