ELEMENTARY STUDENTS SELECTED FOR SEPTEMBER/OCTOBER

September and October’s Elementary Student of the Month took place on Thursday, November 4. The students who were recognized for September were (back) Kaylee DeJong, daughter of Travis and Amanda DeJong; and Haven Haenfler, daughter of Becky and Jeff Haenfler.

LUKKES INVITED TO SPEAK AT VETERANS DAY PROGRAM

Veterans Day is held on the anniversary of the end of World War I to honor veterans and victims of all wars. This year, because of no school due to state football, the Veterans Day Program was held on November 10. Students of Avon attended and the community was also invited to attend.

HEARTBREAKING END TO ALMOST PERFECT PIRATE SEASON

On November 5, 2021, the Avon Pirate Football team took on the Dell Rapids St. Mary Cardinals for the 3rd round playoff game. The Pirates, seeded number one, were hoping this game would be the final stepping stone on the road to the Dome.

DRAMA DEPARTMENT PREPARES SERIOUS ONE-ACT PLAY

Avon’s drama department is getting ready for a serious production for one-act competition for Regions on January 25. The cast picked the play The Empty Chair by Tim Kelly. The Empty Chair is about a counseling center for teenagers recovering from substance abuse.

VOCALISTS ATTEND ALL STATE CHOIR FESTIVAL

Local vocalists recently attended the 69th Annual All State Choir and Orchestra Festival. After the football playoff game on October 28, Kley Heumiller, Sarah Swier, Kimberly Tolsma, and I made our way to Rapid City with choir director Autumn Schultz. We got to our hotel around 1:00 A.M.

Jon and Lynn Stather drove to Sioux Falls last Wednesday where they visited her sister, Diane Ewing. Mark and Roxie Pier of Crofton, Nebraska were visitors on Saturday in the home of her mother, Irene Eben.

Obesity affects approximately 40 percent of American adults, and I’ve been one of them for nearly as long as I can remember. There are innumerable schemes that promise effortless, or nearly effortless, weight loss, and many diets that claim to be the best approach.

LOCAL FIREFIGHTERS HONORED

Imagine it is 6:30 p.m. and you are just sitting down for an evening meal with your family. As the meal is served, you begin to talk with your children about the highlights of their day. The conversation is just getting interesting when you hear the emergency siren in the distance.

Library news

The Library has prepared a Thanksgiving activity for the children ages K-12 grade. Pick up a picture at the Library to color before Thanksgiving and return it for the Library to display. Each returned picture will get a small prize from the Library.

1931 - 90 years ago Misses Helen Robertson and Alice Lindquist were Yankton visitors last Saturday. Armistice Day passed very quietly in Lake Andes. Aside from the football games between the home and Bonesteel school teams, nothing of importance happened.
