EMERGENCY CONSERVATION PROGRAM FOR CHARLES MIX COUNTY

Charles Mix County farms and ranches suffering severe flood damage may be eligible for FSA assistance under the Emergency Conservation Program (ECP) administered by the Charles Mix County Farm Service Agency (FSA).

Fingers crossed that spring is finally here! With the event of spring comes spring clean- up. I am happy to announce that the library is sponsoring a community cleanup contest. You may have seen this contest on Facebook. Here is the library’s take on the clean -up.

Singing is in the air at Andes Elementary and Middle School as Festival Choirs were represented by Andes Central in both Stickney and Yankton. (Pictured above) Lexi Schoenfelder, Margaret Fischer and Katrina Zephier participated in the 4-6 Festival Choir in Stickney on March 11th.

COLOSSAL WINTER STORM HITS THE AREA

Approximately 8-16 inches of snow were reported in the Lake Andes area following a spring snow storm that came through the area last week.

GROW SOUTH DAKOTA RECEIVES NEIGHBOR-WORKS AMERICA GRANTS

GROW South Dakota, a member of the NeighborWorks network, is receiving $564,000 from the Neighborhood Reinvestment Corporation, dba Neighbor-Works America. This grant will support its affordable housing and community development activities.

DOES COMMUNICATION REALLY HAVE TO BE SO HARD IN SMALL TOWNS!

One-by-one, sixteen local leaders from multiple neighboring rural communities, courageously, yet with some hesitancy, walked through the door of the community room. They did not know what to expect from this gathering. They didn’t even all know each other.

THE SOUNDS OF SPRING

On a good day, I can hear one of the telltale sounds of spring just outside my office window. No, it’s not the melody of a meadowlark, or the honks of snow geese heading north on their spring migration, although for many South Dakotans both are indicative of winter’s end.

ROADS REMAIN CLOSED IN COUNTY

Due to the additional heavy rain and high water, many roads remain closed in the area. The wet conditions and previous damage inflicted from the March flooding have left many rural gravel roads unsuitable for travel.
