DESCENDANTS OF TOM AND LENA PIER GATHER

Eighty-seven descendants of Tom and Lena Pier (Kingsburg residents 1914-1933, Avon residents 1933-1968) gathered in Avon for a reunion of their extended families. The weekend began with a dinner held at Pour Corner, hosted by the Community Bank. A gorgeous South Dakota evening encouraged games and shenanigans by the cousins who were quickly reacquainted.

AVON LIBRARY SUMMER READING PROGRAM KICKS OFF

The Avon Public Library kicked off their Summer Reading Program entitled, “Are You a Farm Safety Hero?” There were 41 Preschool through 6th grade children in attendance and about 30 parents, infants, caregivers, and volunteers. Our tiny library was packed and bustling with learning. Board member, Loretta Knodel, read “Staying Safe ontheFarm”writteninmemory of a 7 year old Yankton boy who passed away in a farm accident. The children enjoyed making chicken crafts, eating chicken feed (Chex mix) and checking out books. The prize wheel revealed three winners who each received a $30 gift card to Bomgaars. Winners wereAustinRamirez,Burke Baade and Milayna Krcil. Five other children were chosen to pick prizes out of the treasure box, which includes boxed book sets. We will be giving away three $30Bomgaarsgiftcardseach session to those attending as well as $60 gift cards for the top reader in each of 4 age groups(includingadults)this summer. Stop into the library to let Twila know what books you have read for our contest! They do not have to be library books to be counted in our contest.
