MERRITT STEGMEIER IS BEING HONORED AS THE LAKE ANDES AUGUST VETERAN OF THE MONTH

Stegmeier is a Veteran of the Vietnam War. Merritt was drafted on December 28th, 1965, and assigned to the Army. Stegmeier spent his eight weeks of basic training at Fort Ord in CA. He was then sent to Fort Monmouth, NJ for sixteen weeks for his Advanced Individual Training (AIT). His AIT was in microwave/radio repair along with fifteen other soldiers. On August 15th, 1966, Merrit was sent to Vietnam. He deployed from Yakima, WA then to Oakland, CA where he was sent to Saigon, Vietnam.

AC/DC CROSS-COUNTRY FALL SPORTS PREVIEW

The Andes Central/Dakota Christian Cross Country team is a very young team. They are coached by first year coach, Beth Harrington. There are no seniors or juniors on the team and only one sophomore and one freshman. Only one returning athlete has experience, and that is Eilie DeHaan. She qualified in 2022 for the state cross-country meet.

The Andes Central School District has a new preschool/ head start teacher this year. Terra Spaans joins the Andes Central teaching staff as a firstyear teacher. Terra recently graduated with her degree in early childhood education. She previously worked as a special and general education paraprofessional for the Corsica-Stickney elementary school for four years.

AVON'S NEW HEAD FOOTBALL COACH, JUSTIN LUKKES

Forthe2023footballseason,Avonwillseeanewhead coachtakechargeofthefootballprogram.ThePirates welcome new head coach, Justin Lukkes. Lukkes is a 2003 graduate of Avon High School. He grew up on a farm outside of Dante, and then moved to Avon when he started high school. Lukkes was very involved in Avon sports, being a part of the football, basketball, track, golf, baseball, and swim teams growing up. After graduation, Justin attended Mitchell Technical College where he majored in architectural design and building construction.
