WAGNER FEATHER CEREMONY HELD

Wagner Feather Ceremony was held Friday, May 14th at Wagner Community School. The Feather Ceremony is a symbol of hope that the students will soar toward a brighter tomorrow and rewarding future for themselves, their community and their tribe. HEMINGWAY WASN’T ALONE IN WRITING ABOUT THE OLD MAN AND THE SEA

It was 5:20 A.M. the morning of April 21st, and Ed and Michelle, good friends of Mark and LuAnn, were going to pick me up. They had offered a year ago to take me marlin fishing, and it was finally going to happen. We would go out for the day with their personal friend and master angler, Captain Nicolas Villa. He was ably assisted on his 30’ twin engine boat, the “Mahi Mahi,” by first mates Nicholas, his son, and an equally talented Jose.

Looking for an activity to do during Fish Days? The South Dakota Humanities Council and the Lake Andes Public Library are holding a One Book South Dakota book discussion at the Community Center on Main Street at 4:00 pm on Sunday, June 6th. Admission is free. “The Children’s Blizzard”, by Melanie Benjamin is the book selection and you can borrow a copy of the book from the Library. GRANDMOTHER’S LOVE SURPASSES BACK PAIN

Back pain can be disabling, not only in terms of employment but also in terms of social connections. This point was never more clear to me than when I saw Maria, a 56-year-old experiencing severe low back pain for nearly five years. The pain prevented her from standing or walking for more than five minutes at a time and had cost her the job she loved. Maria shared with me her one heart-wrenching goal; she wanted to hold her first grandchild, a six-month-old baby boy. Doing so had caused pain so intense it put her in bed for a full day afterwards.
