...TO THE BABY'S CREDIT

Credits are more powerful than exemptions and deductions. This is because they reduce taxes dollar-for-dollar, rather than just reducing the amount of income subject to tax. For 2018 through 2025, the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act (TCJA) doubles the child credit to $2,000 per child under age 17.

THE PERFECT STORM

On January 7, the IRS confirmed in a news release that filing season will start on time – January 28 – and that it will be issuing refunds. The IRS also announced that it will recall a significant portion of its workforce, currently furloughed as part of the government shutdown.
