It has been a while. While most high school athletics have been affected in some way, shape, or form by the coronavirus, probably none more so than track and field as these student athletes missed an entire season due to the pandemic. But it was time to get back at it and last Tuesday, April 6, Wagner’s tracksters loaded the bus and went to Parkston to compete for the first time in close to two years.
Read moreOn Monday morning, March 29th, Tom, my sonin-law, Sam, my grandson, and I headed for the Green Bay area of Lake Michigan. Trophy walleyes were our goal. Conditions on the water were unpleasant with strong winds and the 43 degree temperature. The water temperature was 37 degrees – too cold to induce the pre-spawn walleyes to hit. I caught two walleyes – our total for the day, but anytime I can spend a day on the water with Tom and Sam, it’s a good day.

The Avon boys basketball team placed one athlete on LMVC and two athletes on the All Conference. Senior Ashton Frank received All Conference and LMVC and junior Eli Watchorn received honorable mention for All Conference.

Read moreThe Wagner boys basketball team qualified for the SODak 16 this season. They lost the state qualifying game to the eventual state A runner up, Sioux Valley. The Red Raiders finished with 11 wins and 11 losses. The team broke some team records that date back the last 11 seasons. The boys made 138 three pointers, shot 50% from two point, grabbed 717 rebounds, had 515 defensive rebounds and finished with 214 steals. Individual season records that were set were: Toby Zephier who shot 44% from three and Nolan Carda had 73 offensive rebounds. Career records that were set were: Jaden Peters games played - he finished his career playing in 91 games, Nolan Carda finished his career averaging 13 rebounds per game; Jaden Peters also set career records in assists with 268 and assists per game with 2.9, and Jaden finished on top of the list for charges taken in a career with 17. Nolan Carda scored 523 points in his career which is 5th all time, Nolan finished third all time in field goal percentage, shooting 55%. Nolan finished number 4 all time in 2 point baskets made with 210 and fourth in two pointers attempted with 373. Nolan shot the second most free throws, 208, had the second most offensive rebounds 140, and third most total rebounds 352. Nolan finished 5th all time in points per game averaging 13.2. Simon Freier finished his career playing in the 5th most games with 78, Simon finished fourth all time in three pointers made with 57 and finished third all time in attempts with 234. The team broke the single game record for rebounds with 53 against Irene Wakanda and broke the team record for three pointers made with 12 against TDA. Nolan Carda broke the single game record for offensive rebounds with 10 against Irene Wakanda.
