WAGNER IHS CONTINUES FIGHT AGAINST COVID-19

The Indian Health Service facility in Wagner has gained attention due to their high vaccination rate which brought acting IHS Director Elizabeth Fowler to make Wagner her first stop Thursday. Fowler wanted to see firsthand the work that IHS employees are doing to support community immunity from a deadly virus that has taken more than 600,000 lives across the United States. The visit was to show support for President Biden’s Month of Action. The focus this month is on actions to make it easier to get vaccinated, mobilize the country around vaccine outreach and education efforts and incentive vaccination. The National Month of Action mobilizes an all-of-American sprint to get as many U.S. adults as possible to get at least one shot by July 4th, so that more people can get the protection they need to be safe from the pandemic.

AVON 18U SOFTBALL RESULTS

On Tuesday, June 22 Avon’s 18U softball team traveled to Tabor for a doubleheader. In game 1 Avon had a difficult time getting runners on base but was able to hold Tabor to 8 runs over 4 innings. Tabor was able to get runs in each inning before the time for game 1 ran out. Alcista Dion pitched for Avon in the 4-inning game and took the loss, striking out 5. Dion and Kinley Doom each had a hit for Avon.

STATE GOLF RESULTS

The Girls Class B State Golf Meet was held June 7th and 8th at Edgebrook Golf Course in Brookings. Avon Freshman McKenna Kocmich medaled, placing in the top 25 in her first ever state golf tournament appearance. Kocmich shot an 18 hole score of 95 on day one, and an 18 hole score of 90 on day two, for a 36 hole aggregate score of 185, which earned her an 18th place finish. Congratulations McKenna on a great season and a great finish at State!!

SUMMER READING PROGRAM

The Avon Public Library Summer Reading Program met for their second session on June 21st. There were 33 children and a dozen adults in attendance. The guest reader, Anthony Pacheco from Canton, Michigan read, “Fidgety Fish and Friends.” The children enjoyed sand pudding cups decorated with an ocean scene. Participants also continued work on their Young Author’s Workshop projects. This week’s winners were Raegan, Roslyn, and Dayton Brandt. Thank you to Avon Community Bank, Deb and Nyla’s, and Walter Construction for generous donations to our program.
