WHEN ROOSTERS LED TO ROMANCE

It was a Friday night in late October of 1962. Tom Larson, my East Men’s Hall roommate, and I were returning on foot to the SDSC campus in Brookings after a few games of snooker and ten-cent beers at B&G billiards, otherwise known as Gussie’s. I was on the football team, and we either had an open date or I didn’t make the traveling squad for a game that required air travel. Little did I know that something so insignificant could bring about a monumental event in the course of my life.

TEN LOCAL STUDENTS AWARDED JACKETS BY SD FFA FOUNDATION

Bath, SD (September 28, 2020) - To its owner, the FFA jacket is a physical reminder of the personal accomplishments achieved through the organization - a symbol of commitment and dedication for all who wear the corduroy. This fall 403 South Dakota FFA members from 67 chapters, will receive their own FFA jackets through the SD FFA Foundation Blue Jackets Bright Futures FFA Jacket Program - carrying forward that long-standing tradition of pride, dignity and honor. Jackets were sponsored by various individuals through the SD FFA Foundation program, welcoming new members into the fabric of FFA. FFA members filled out the Blue Jackets Bright Futures FFA Jacket Program application, answering short essay questions about their FFA experience and goals, competing to earn their own FFA jacket instead of purchasing one. 2020 recipients & their sponsors are:

RED SHIRT SUNDAY AT EAST LAKE ANDES CHURCH

Imagine it is 6:30 p.m. and you are just sitting down for an evening meal with your family. As the meal is served, you begin to talk with your children about the highlights of their day. The conversation is just getting interesting when you hear the emergency siren in the distance. Without hesitation, your father wipes his face and gets up from the table. He rushes off to the bedroom to grab his keys, says goodbye, and heads to the fire station.

I recently got to enjoy one of my favorite days of the year in South Dakota, the annual Buffalo Roundup. I appreciate each and every day that I have the privilege to serve you as governor, but the day of the Buffalo Roundup is truly special. It incorporates South Dakota’s culture, heritage, outdoor spirit, and love for freedom, and it’s a heck of a lot of fun to boot.

This Week in ROTARY NEWS

President Bryan Slaba was present at Rotary on September 30th for our last meeting in the third quarter of our Rotary year. Attendance is still running around 12 members. We are hoping the Coronavirus slows down soon so all our members feel comfortable attending our meetings.

WAGNER HALL OF FAME

The Wagner Athletic Hall of Fame Committee announced its 2nd Class to be inducted in January. Leading this class is Travis Slaba, four-time State Champion in Wrestling. He was a member of the 1992 and 1994 Wagner State Wrestling Championship Teams. Travis was named to the High School National Wrestling All-American Team. Travis also participated in Football and Track and graduated from Wagner Community School in 1995. He participated in the wrestling program at the University of Nebraska.
