Going into post play, the Lady Pirates were third seed in Class B Region 6. The quarterfinal game took place in Avon on February 22 against the Marty Braves. The Lady Pirates ran away with a 72-29 win which set them up to play Platte-Geddes on a neutral court. The Panthers met up with the Lady Pirates in the Corn Palace for the Semifinal game. A 42-28 loss sent the Panthers home and the Lady Pirates to the SoDak 16 game! The number two seed DeSmet Bulldogs, and the fifteen seed Lady Pirates played in the Huron Arena on March 3. After a tough fight, the Lady Pirates fell just short with a final score of 44-57.

Read moreThis year's elementary Winter Olympics was held on February 24. Lindsey Fathke, 6th grade teacher, was in charge of this year's Olympics. It was successful because of the help of Student Body council members Samantha Brodeen, Katie Gretschmann, Reece Loewe, and Tiffany Pelton, as well as the assistance of PE teacher, Mr. Tim Leibel, who supplied all of the equipment. They were able to have a great turnout this year.
Read moreSophomore Tyler Tjeerdsma wrestled February 26 in Sioux Falls in the 126 pound weight class. Tjeerdsma ended up placing seventh at state. Tjeerdsma said, “Keeping my mind right to make weight was the most challenging part of wrestling at state.” Spending time with the wrestling team was Tjeerdsma’s most enjoyable part of state. Advice Tjeerdsma would give to younger wrestlers is, “Make the sport fun, but be competitive!” A quote Tjeerdsma lives by is, “Never give up!”
Read moreMonday, February 28, the Avon Boys Basketball Team traveled to Kimball to take on the Kimball-White Lake WildKats for the first round of Region 6B basketball. Unfortunately, the Pirates’ season was cut short due to a 31-54 loss against the WildKats. The Pirates ended the season with a record of 3-18.

According to government teacher Kris Cahoy, this is an opportunity for the senior class to run a campaign and organize their stances on issues in order to create a media promotion for their candidates. This month-long project started February 15 and ends on election day, March 15. All the grades will get to vote.
