ANDES CENTRAL SENIOR SPOTLIGHT

This week’s featured Andes Central Senior is Claire Johnson. Claire is the daughter of Brian and Katherine Johnson. She has four siblings Alex Evans, Joey Evans, Baylee Johnson and AJ Johnson. During her high school years, Claire has been involved in volleyball, basketball, track, FCCLA and All-State Choir. Claire has been very active in the community. For community service, she has been a CCD youth group teacher for the 4th and 5th graders, filled sandbags for Lake Andes during the flood, mentored elementary students, and has helped load cars for Feeding South Dakota. Thanksgiving dinner is Claire’s favorite school lunch and her favorite teacher is Mrs. Maynard. Mrs. Maynard teaches anatomy and Claire really enjoyed the class because Mrs. Maynard always kept it exciting and interesting with all of the fun classroom activities.

MARVIN GALL - LAKE ANDES VETERAN OF THE MONTH

Marvin Gall is a World War II Veteran, one of the few local remaining WWII Veterans. He was drafted in June of 1946 and was a part of the last group of draftees to be sent overseas near the end of WWII. When Marvin was drafted, he had the option to enlist for 18 months or to serve for the duration of the war. Marvin chose to enlist for the 18 months. Those drafted that chose to serve for the duration of the war were discharged within six months of beginning their service.

The Andes Central/Dakota Christian girls basketball team’s head coach for the 2023-2024 season is Shane Niewenhuis. Shane has been coaching for 12 years. Coach Niewenhuis is assisted this year by Ben Kroese and Lisa Foley.

'A DATE THAT WILL LIVE IN INFAMY'

December 7, 1941 is a “date that will live in infamy” as stated by President Theodore Roosevelt in his famous speech after the events of the Pearl Harbor bombing. That event let to the United States involvement in World War II. President’s Roosevelt’s speech was a call to arms and a declaration of war against this act of aggression by a foreign nation. He never wanted us to forget what happened. President Roosevelt concluded his speech by saying “With confidence in our armed forces, with the unbounding determination of our people, we will gain the inevitable triumph – so help us God.”

The head coach for the 20232024 Andes Central wrestling team is David Kocer. Coach Kocer is assisted by Jason Knebel and the JV/Jr. High coach is Jacob Ziegler. This is Coach Kocer’s first season as the head coach for Andes Central.

ANDES CENTRAL STUDENTS ATTEND ALADDIN PERFORMANCE

The Sioux Falls Washington Pavilion presented the hit Broadway Musical Aladdin from November 28th through December 3rd. The Andes Central Music Boosters sponsored a trip for Andes Central middle school and high school band and chorus members to go and experience Aladdin. Thirty-seven Andes Central students along with 12 chaperones attended the performance at the Washington Pavilion Friday, December 1st.
