PROOF THAT WE DO NOT NEED A NEW DEER LICENSE APPLICATION FORMAT

Rog's Rod & Nimrod While I generally like to keep the contents of my column on the light side, today I am going to throw some numbers around to prove my point on the SD Game, Fish, & Parks proposed change for the 2019 deer hunting license applications.

TAX REFORM 2.0: BETTER STABILITY. BETTER FUTURE.

Last year, we overhauled the tax code for the first time since Ronald Reagan was president. With the passage of these historic tax cuts, the average South Dakota family of four will see their after-tax income rise by $2,400. We doubled the Child Tax Credit to $2,000 per child.

FINALLY ATTAINING TAX UNIFORMITY

This past week, legislators returned to Pierre for a special legislative session. I don’t call a special session lightly. During my two terms as governor I have called only one other during the summer of 2017, to deal with the non-meandered waters issue.

SILVER LINING

The Tax Cuts and Jobs Act (TCJA) didn’t eliminate the individual alternative minimum tax (AMT). But the law did draw a silver lining around it. Revised rules now lessen the likelihood that many taxpayers will owe substantial taxes under the AMT for 2018 through 2025.

THERE IS SUCH A THING AS AN "EASY" ELK

In my column of two weeks ago, I expressed concern for possible meat spoilage as my coming Wyoming elk hunt was scheduled for late August and potential warm weather. My apprehensions were needless as it was 34 degrees F. when I dropped my elk early on the morning of August 28th.

RAISING RILEY AND OTHER CHORES

Riley Crosley from Crofton, NB is our grandson, and he has Monday off from school this week. The plan is for him to stay overnight on Sunday and to be home by Tuesday. That means I had better brush up on my sports.

Weather Watch We’ve had a little taste of what is to come, and I don’t like it. Last week Tuesday, we had severe thunderstorms pass through the area, dropping about an inch or so of rain and enough hail to make the ground white for awhile.
