NYLA ZASTROW

Nyla Zastrow, age 85, passed away on October 27th, 2025 surrounded by her family, at her home in Columbia. Funeral Services were held Monday, November 3 at Columbia UCC with pastors Jon Damaska and Eldon Reich officiating. Burial followed at Lakeview Cemetery, Columbia. Spitzer-Miller Funeral home of Aberdeen was in charge of arrangements. In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred to the MakeA-Wish Foundation.

Nyla was born in Ravinia on September 16, 1940 to Nyle and Florence (Deuschle) Martin and was raised on the family farm near Wagner. She graduated from Wagner High School and graduated from Southern State College with a teaching degree. She taught elementary school in Delmont, Wagner, and Columbia. She met her husband Robert when she went to Peavy Lumber in Columbia to purchase bricks and boards to make a bookshelf for her schoolroom. They married November 22, 1962 and went on to have five children. They moved four times and the first three were on the same block!

Nyla devoted her life to raising her children. Her greatest joy were her children, grand-children and great-grandchildren, who will forever cherish the memories they made together. In 1997, she welcomed into the family, a bonus son and his family; Marla’s natural brother.

Nyla was a woman of faith and very active in her church. Nyla loved to travel, gardening, card club, reading and dancing. She touched countless lives with her kindness and generosity; and her strength and grace inspired everyone who knew and loved her.

Grateful for having shared her life are children: Marla Zastrow, Terry (Wanda) Buchholz, Jesse Zastrow, Staci (Jeff) Seabold, Jana (Mike) Hahne and Julie (Jeff) Voeller.
