Funeral services for Joey Ober, 81, of Wagner were Wednesday, September 23 at St. John Lutheran Church in Wagner. Burial was in the ZCBJ Cemetery, rural Wagner. Peters Funeral Home in Wagner was in charge of arrangements.

Joey James Ober was born March 3, 1939 at Delmont, the son of William and Rose (Bartunek) Ober. He passed away Sunday, September 20, 2020 at Avera McKennan Hospital in Sioux Falls.

Joey’s parents moved to a farm south of Wagner. He graduated from Wagner High School in 1957. He then worked at a mechanic shop in Lake Andes. He later worked a a gas station and began farming. He served in the SD National Guard from 1956 to 1963. Joey was a member of the American Legion.

Joey married Phyllis Hargens of Stickney on July 25, 1963. They later moved to a farm southeast of Wagner. Joey continued to farm and do mechanic work. In 1994, he sold the farm, bought Kocer’s Used Parts and moved into town.

Joey will be remembered for his love of toy tractor pulls, antique tractor pulls and drag racing snowmobiles on ice.

Thankful for having shared his life are his wife Phyllis Ober of Wagner and his family. The family of Bill and Rose Ober was made up of their children Martin, Joey and Rose. Martin lived in Wagner, Yankton and Rapid City, where Martin taught school, Joey farmed and Rose married Melvin Gibson. They had one son, Brian Gibson. Martin and Betty had a son, Mark of Wagner and his wife Lorraine and their children: Brandi (Coenraad) Koegelenberg, Tyler, Michael and E´mariyon; Lisa Hansen of Wyoming and her children Layne, Alley and Aiden.

Joey was preceded in death by his parents, brother Martin and brother-in-law Melvin.
