The 31st annual East-West Shootout, sponsored by the Gregory Athletics Club, was held on Monday, March 18, 2024, at the Gregory Memorial Auditorium.

Out of the 11 wrestlers, eight of them brought home medals. The 11 students who qualified for the AAU State Wrestling tournament were Samuel Ulrich, Kruze Kaczor, Waylon O’Connor, Kharis Dion, Brynlee Kaczor, JorDee Hjelm, Suttyn Bergin, Keelan Bergin, Watson Bergin, Steven Nielsen and Tessa Nielsen. A big thank you to the dedicated coaches who volunteered their time to teach the Andes Central youth wrestlers. These coaches were Rick Bergin, Rod Bergin, and Danny Hjelm. Wrestlers that placed were Samuel Ulrich, 5th place; Kharis Dion, State Champion; Brynlee Kaczor, 3rd place; JorDee Hjelm, State Champion; Suttyn Bergin, 2nd place; Keelan Bergin, 7th place; Steven Nielsen, 6th place; and Tessa Nielsen, 2nd place. Out of the eight youth wrestlers that placed, there were two who took home state championship titles. Kharis Dion and JorDee Hjelm both earned state championship titles at the State AAU Wrestling Tournament.

Read moreThe Bon Homme/Avon AAU wrestlers had an excellent season and ended their season at the AAU State Wrestling Tournament on March 15th -17th in Rapid City at The Monument. 16 wrestlers qualified for the AAU State Wrestling Tournament and 13 of those 16 came home with medals. Of those 13 wrestlers to bring home medals were two that brought home State Championship titles in their respective divisions and weight classes. They were Thayne and Tucker Tjeerdsma.

Randall is relatively new to the wrestling scene and has only been wrestling for two years. Powersdecidedtostart wrestling after being encouraged by wrestling parents and other wrestlers. During Randall’s wrestling career, he has had a lot of help and inspiration from Travis Tjeerdsma, the father of one of his teammates,Travis,andBradBierema, Powers’ football coach.

Out of the eight qualifying wrestlers, five of the wrestlers brought home medals. The eight wrestlers that qualified for the state tournament were Klay Kokesh (tots 57), Jacob Holzbauer (Bantam 57), Lane Koupal (Midgets 63), Rachel Holzbauer (girls Midgets 77), John Krcil (Novice 64), Tom Krcil (Novice 63), Mason Turner (Novice 117), and Frank Krcil (Schoolboy 90). A big thank you to the dedicated coaches who volunteered their time to teach the WCS youth wrestlers this season. These coaches were Alex Kocer and Austin Genzlinger. Before the wrestlers left for the AAU State Tournament in Rapid City, WCS had the wrestlers do a walk through the hallways so that the staff and students could wish them all good luck. The five wrestlers that placed were Klay Kokesh, state champion; Frank Krcil, 2nd place; Tom Krcil, 3rd place; Rachel Holzbauer, 5th place; and John Krcil, 6th place. Klay Kokesh came home with a state championship title in the Tot’s 57 lb weight class.
