Wednesday, May 5th Wagner Rotary members gathered at the Wagner Community School for their annual presentation of awards recognizing the top scholars in Grades 9 thru 12. Due to Covid restrictions the membership did not serve a meal but held the ceremony inside the school theatre. In the absence of President Bryan Slaba Rotarian Jeff Doom welcomed the students with a short address. Vice President Becky Brunsing called the students forward and awarded the certificates. Senior students were asked to announce who their parents were as well as any plans for further education. Please see the pictures in this edition which were taken by the Wagner Post.

Students from the Marty Indian School, Andes Central and Wagner Community School were given the opportunity to design a community art project for the “Imagine Design Contest” relating to the 605 Unity Jam that will be held in June. The students were asked to use their creativity, imagination and talent to create an original idea that would be drawn on a bison image. The designs submitted would then be judged by a group of community individuals who would select the best ideas to have professional artists then transform the students design on to a fiberglass sculpture of a a bison that would be permanently placed on the hill side on the north side of Wagner Lake. A plaque would also be placed with the sculptures stating the importance of unity and also list the name of the Wagner Chamber of Commerce and the Yankton Sioux Tribe, as they made this community art project possible. Also on the plaques will be the names of the winning student designers and the professional artists who then painted the designs. The students were excited to be involved as the sculpture represents one of the most iconic figures in the world and helps draw attention to our state from all parts of the world.

The Native American Community Board held a student contest for a COVID-19 mask design. The contest was held during the month of March. The winner was a Wagner Middle School student, Cadee Nelsen of Lake Andes, congratulations. The theme of the contest was “Do It For Future Generations”. The design is to encourage people to wear the mask in order to help prevent the spread of COVID – 19.

Several Wagner area residents were able to once again get together and enjoyed some good food and especially the chance to once again be able to socialize as they had before the pandemic started. The Dakota Senior Meal Program is once again back to serving the noon meal at the Parkview Villa apartments in Wagner. The “Welcome Back Meal” included baked chicken, mash potatoes and gravy, corn and a desert. Everyone seemed to really enjoy the meal and several commented on how tasty the meal was. Those in attendance commented that it was really nice to get together again with their friends to enjoy a meal. The Dakota Senior Meal Program makes it possible for people to enjoy a nutritious meal and be able to socialize once again, something that many said they really missed during this past year. Although the meals had been delivered to their homes during this time, what was really missing was the time to be with others and visit.
