Weather Watch
A long time ago, we had snow on Halloween (don’t ask me what year) and the snow never did go away until Spring. That made for a long winter. I’m guessing this one is going to seem about as long.
Every December, the state legislature meets to receive a budget proposal from the governor. This proposal is the starting point for the legislative budget process, which ends with the passage of
a budget bill at the end of session in March.
In last week’ column, I mentioned taking a shot at a deer that was roughly 350 yards away. I’ll admit that the shot was, up to a point, inspired by the size of the deer. I can’t recall the last time I took that long a shot, but it would go back to the 70’s prior to my debilitating tremor.
Well, here we go again, as Ronald Reagan used to say. There is something about the years that end in the number 8 that is kind of weird. Think back to the years ‘48, ‘58, and on through ‘88, ‘98, and now 2018.

STATE
As I enter my final weeks as governor, many people are asking me to reflect on my time in office. I’m not a person who worries much about a “legacy.” I just hope that I have left things a little better than I found them.
Coming from a dairy background, I was well versed in livestock tracking- every birth was recorded, every breeding date, and when the animal may come back into heat.
Back on the farm, we had a big dining room table that sat against one wall most of the year.
On Thanksgiving, Dad pulled that table out into the middle of the room. Mom covered it with the good tablecloth and set the good dishes.
