Some time ago a former Mitchell Daily Republic editor asked me if I’d like to see my column syndicated, and I told him that syndication would be ok by me. He failed in his attempt to syndicate the column, and I suspect that the failure related to my column being too local and not regional enough.

There’s nothing like a few solid hours of drive time through some wide-open country with a big, beautiful sky filling your windshield to set your life in perspective. I recently had the opportunity to spend a few days on the road—just me, my dog, Frankie, and Spotify over the Bluetooth in the car.

On Monday morning, March 28th, Tom, my son-in-law, and I headed to Genoa, Wisconsin, a very small town on the east bank of the Mississippi River. Genoa lies 17 miles south of La Crosse, just above Lock and Dam #8.

Post-traumatic stress disorder, or PTSD, was first listed as a medical diagnosis in 1980. However, it has been recognized and called by many different names throughout history. The first recorded description of PTSD is in the Epic of Gilgamesh which dates back to 2100 B.C.

If you are an avid angler, you want to be on our Francis Case Reservoir, or beneath the dams at either Pickstown or Ft. Thompson, pursuing walleyes right now! One can either troll or toss minnow-tipped jigs, but either way, move or retrieve slowly and quietly.

I enjoy visiting with my colleagues who are medical specialists. We dive in and explore the depths of a particular condition. However, there is something to say about the breadth of knowledge that a family medicine physician is expected to have.

Although I’ve relished my adventures in the southern hemisphere from Africa to New Zealand, I’ve enjoyed my South Dakota hunts just as much. However, my favorite direction is north. Moose and caribou hunts have been awesome, but my favorite is fishing the waters of Northern Saskatchewan.

Since ancient times, marijuana has been used for medicinal and recreational purposes in many cultures. In the United States, it became illegal during prohibition, like alcohol. Later, under the Controlled Substances Act in the 1970’s, the federal government classified marijuana a Schedule 1 drug.
