The cross country athlete of the week is Zander Fathke. He is the son of Chris and Nikki Fathke. Zander joined cross country because he wanted to run and push himself. This is Zander’s first year of cross country. His routine on the day of a meet consists of waking up, going to school, and getting ready to run, and pump-up song is 10K by KB. Zander is motivated to excel in cross country because he wants to reach a goal. This sport challenges him as he faces long days, due to his participation in two sports this fall, and also keeping up with his schoolwork. The people that inspire Zander the most are his parents because they’re always supporting him. Being an athlete has shaped Zander to aim higher, push harder, and stay positive. Zander’s favorite memory from cross country is his first time running a race. If Zander was given superpowers to help him in cross country, he would choose superspeed, so he could win every time. His most embarrassing moment from this season is going the wrong way on a course! If Zander could travel anywhere in the world to compete, he would want to go to California because it is nice and warm. The best piece of advice Zander has received is, “Do your best, and don’t worry about the rest.” After a tough day at cross country, Zander likes to relax by eating BBQ Corn Nuts and drinking sweet tea. He also likes to celebrate big wins by spending time with his family. Zander’s favorite cross country course is Parkston because that meet was his first time he was able to place in varsity. The most challenging part of the race for Zander is the hills because you need to use a lot of energy. Zander’s advice to younger athletes looking to improve is: Don’t give up, Great things take time!
