YOUNG’S JAG PROJECT BENEFITS COMMUNITY

On March 10 and 11, Laila Young held a Food & Cleaning Supply Donation. Laila was challenged by her JAG Specialist to do a Senior project which would benefit many people in the community. The Donation was held at Wagner Community School. Wednesday, March 10th was Hat Day with Thursday, March 11th being Pajama Day. If student or teacher donated to the drive on Wednesday, they were allowed to wear a hat for the day. Thursday if student or teacher donated to the drive, they were able to wear comfy pj’s all day. The Food & Cleaning Donation Drive was a huge success. All donations and proceeds were donated to the Marty Food Pantry.

When asked why Laila chose this project, she stated that she knows what the families are going through and how tough it is sometimes to put food on the table. Laila asked for cleaning supplies to be donated as well because that is something that is always needed especially with all that is going on in the world today. She felt that this food and cleaning supply drive would help out families in need and others that utilize the Marty Food Pantry. The Food & Cleaning Supply drive that Laila organized will help benefit many families.

Laila has been a member of JAG since she was in 7th grade. Including her senior year, she has been in JAG for 6 years. She feels JAG has helped her learn many, many skills but it overall helped her become a better person. JAG has basically helped shape her into the person that she is today. Laila is a winner at the 2020 JAG-SD Virtual Career Development Conference, normally this accomplishment would have earned her a trip to the National Student Leadership Academy in Washington, D.C. and competing nationally but the event will also be virtual this year.

As stated before Laila felt this was a good project to do because there are many people struggling with food insecurities and having hard times at this moment. She just wanted to help make it a bit easier for them. Laila presented the donations to the Marty Food Pantry on Friday, March 12th. Laila raised over $250 and collected about 275 items for the Needy Nook, which is a part of the Food Pantry at Marty. Thank you Laila for organizing this drive for those in need.
