10 Years Ago – 2014

The SD National Guard helped build a play system that the Pickstown board purchased in order to update the Tom Brokaw Park in Pickstown.

Vern Sip turned 80 and had a celebration at the American Legion Hall.

Americanism poem and essay winners were announced for the American Legion Auxiliary’s annual contest. Winners were Jillian Beeson, 1st place in 4th grade poem; Paige Anderson, 2nd place in 4th grade poem; Ciara Nelson, 1st place in 5th grade essay; Sasha Podhradsky, 1st place in essay grades 11th-12th. Podhradsky won first in district 8. Chloe Noteboom won first place in 9th-10th grade essay and also received first place in the district 8 competition.

Megan Cooke and Chris Kuca were featured as the senior spotlights for the week.

Wagner Fire Department elected their officers. Eric Anderson, Chief; Chip Petrik, Assistant Chief; and Dave Greger, Secretary/Treasurer.

WCS Senior, David Kocer, signed his national letter of intent to wrestle at SDSU.

20 Years Ago – 2004

Community pays tribute to a fallen soldier. Flags flew half-staff as the community mourns the loss of Spc. Dennis Morgan, a member of the South Dakota National Guard’s Detachment 1, Company 1, 153rd Engineer Battalion, who lost his life April 17th.

Molly Vostad and Tyler Thaler announced their wedding date, June 26.

Michele Koupal of Dante was awarded the Outstanding Freshman Math Student at the annual University of Sioux Falls Awards Reception and Recognition Program on Friday night, April 16.

The Mighty Mo-Donnas of Wagner is an official chapter of the Red Hat Society.

South Dakota National Guard officials announced last week that the 740th Transportation Company and the 842nd Engineer Company will be extended for an additional 90 to 120 days beyond their scheduled one year “boots on the ground” tour of duty in the Middle East.

Stan Nedved was elected as the new Fire Chief of the Wagner Volunteer Fire Department. 30 Years Ago – 1994

Brecke Sanitation was the newest business to Wagner. Wagner Community School District will receive $677,455.00 in general state aid for the next year, this an increase of 141, 699.00 over last year.

David and Diane Robertson are the new managers of Crossroads which was formerly owned by Farmer’s Co-op.

Shandra Slaba and Michael Fischer announced their engagement.

45 Years Ago – 1979

A benefit dance was held for Gary and Diane Kafka to help with expenses as the results of a recent fire to their home.

Winners of the VFW sponsored Voice of Democracy contest were Tammy Ramsdell, 1st; Nyla Youngbluth, 2nd; and Wanda Kocer, 3rd.

Theresa E. Bernie graduated from Antioch School of Law in Washington D.C. She was a 1967 graduate of Marty Indian School.

Sharleen Hollmann and Anthony Coulter exchanged vows.

60 Years Ago – 1964

Oscar Abdouch, George Rokusek, Raymon Duncanson and Robert Rezac were elected to the City Board of Aldermen. Uncontested on the board were Glenn Schoeph and Tom Ptak.

Dennis Swartz, Rennie Corey, Joe Nedved and Jack Kaney were home on furlough form Ft. Leonard Wood, MO.

70 Years Ago – 1954 Construction began on the new city building between the Creamery and the Legion Hall.

Genevieve Broz was installed as President of the VFW Auxiliary.

A son was born to Mr. and Mrs. Ernie Bures, a daughter to Mr. and Mrs. Ted Minahan, a daughter to Mr. and Mrs. Leo Sadler.

92 Years Ago – 1932

Miss Irene Gale was at home with Miss Anastasia Reinhart at a post nuptial shower honoring Mrs. Frank Nuget who was former Miss Anna Broz.

A daughter was born to Mr. and Mrs. Gerald Halstead.

Donald Pirtoucek and Dorothy Evers were recently married and live in Lake Andes.

Mildred Doty was boarding in the Leslie Hawkey Home until she finished her work at Lawrence No. 2.

A son was born to Mr. and Mrs. John Honomichl and a 13-pound son to Mr. and Mrs. Frank Cuka
