10 Years Ago – 2014

Royalty was crowned at the Good Samaritan Society. Ernie Merkwan and Lona Holzbauer were king and queen of the Sunset West neighborhood. Darrel Meis and Loreen Schultz were crowned king and queen of the Center Valley neighborhood. Tom Beeson and Doris Knox were crowned as king and queen of the Golden East neighborhood.

Former Governor Mike Rounds spoke to local farmers at Jamie Soukup’s Pioneer Hi-bred crop shop.

Kimberly Koupal received a Certificate of Athletic Achievement.

Former Governor Mike Rounds, Republican Candidate for the US Senate, visited Rotary.

A fundraiser for the Wagner Area Cancer Foundation, Sweethearts’ Afternoon Out raised $1035. It was great success thanks to the local hairstylists for their generosity and volunteering their services for this great cause.

Juanita Stone and Janice Coleman delivered Valentines to the Veterans at the Good Samaritan Society. The Valentines were made by the Wagner Boys and Girls Club.

Rachel Dion qualified for the state gymnastics meet on vault.

20 Years Ago – 2004

Stephanie Soukup and Jason Miller, both of Vermillion announced their engagement.

Nakita Podhradkay, a freshman in Wagner High School, place second in the Area 1 National American Legion Oratorical contest, hosted by the Hall-Thompson American Legion Post in Irene.

Seaman Robin L. Uecker, United States Navy, distinguished herself by exceptionally meritorious achievement while assigned to the Combined Intelligence and Fusion Center, Directorate of Intelligence, Headquarters, North American Aerospace Defense Command and United States Northern Command Peterson Air Force Base, Colorado, from January 2002 to January 2004.

Kristi Donelan, Janelle Kuhlman and Mateya Kuhlman were honored as the Outstanding Female Athletes at Wagner Community School in recognition of Women in Sports Day.

Ashley Mathis and Alycia Krcil were named to the Academic All-State Volleyball team.

30 Years Ago – 1994

Ribbon cutting ceremonies were held for the financial consultant business of Frank Bures.

Foreign exchange student, Richard Ceizel from Slovakia was spending the year with Kent and Peggy Baldwin and family.

Host families for Rotary exchange student, Ariel Orchansky from Argentina are Dave and Sue Isebrands and Francis and Jeannette Doom.

King and Queen of Hearts at the Wagner Good Samaritan Center were Art Schroeder and Grace Crisman.

A son, Michael James Kokesh, was born to Mike and Jan Kokesh.

45 Years Ago – 1979

Michelle Landon, Chamberlain, was crowned Queen at the 16th Annual Military Ball held at the National Guard Armory in Wagner.

Red Raider wrestlers who competed in the state tournament were Tony Tolliver, Tim Andres, Francis Battalion, Burt Andres, Doug Cokes, Randy Schroeder and Mark Soukis.

Faye Homelike and Jon Williams exchanged vows.

A daughter was born to Mr. and Mrs. George Herrold.

60 Years Ago – 1964

Knights of Columbus initiated 30 new members.

Ted McDowell was chosen for the 1964 All-State Band that was held in Watertown.

Mr. and Mrs. George Jay celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary.

A daughter was born to Mr. and Mrs. Ralph Luke.

A son was born to Mr. and Mrs. Walter Borsch on Feb 16th.

Weekend specials at Go. If. Buches Co. were 16 x 24 towels for 4 for $1.00; 20 x 40 towels, 2 for $1.00; wash cloths, 6 for $1.00, men’s sweatshirts, $1.47 each; flour sacks, 4 for $1.00.

92 Years Ago – 1932

Junior Class presented the play “Drums of Death”. The cast included Sophia Weinstein, Lyle Carpenter, Dean Ambroz, Ella Baxa, G. Wentland, Harold Buus, Dale Sadler, Maratha Hakl.

Coach Clyde Cox resigned his position effective at the close of the school year.
