10 Years Ago- 2014

Kimberly Kokesh was named to the Dean’s List at Mount Marty College. There was a retirement open house held for Gary Carda as he retired from Country Pride Coop. The Boys and Girl’s Club named Curtis Jensen and Russell Turner as their December Youth of the Month. The high school girls’ basketball team beat Gregory 62-32 with Gina Soukup leading the Lady Raiders with 15 points, 8 rebounds, 4 assists and 4 steals. Ali Kuca added 15 points to the scoreboard and 7 rebounds as well. The Lady Raiders also defeated Parkston in a close game 51-48 with the winning points coming from freethrows in overtime. Ali Kuca led the team with 19 points and 7 rebounds followed by Gina Soukup with 17 points, 5 assists and 8 steals.

20 Years Ago – 2004

WCS School Board hired a new superintendent, Susan Smit, as Vernal Andersen was going to be retiring. Norm and Aggie Nedved sold Norm’s Service to Carl and Loretta Soulek. The Nedveds had been operating Norm’s Service for 32 years. Howard Bich was named to the “Inside Triathlon” magazine’s 2003 All American Team. Senior boys’ basketball players Jordan Weber, Alan Nedved, Jamie Soukup, Nick Andal, and their parents were recognized during parent’s night.

30 Years Ago – 1994

Jill Schacht and Brian Van-Zee announced their engagement. Jan Woods was hired as the elementary secretary at Wagner Community School. Suzanne Andal, seventh grader and Jamie Ramsdell, fifth grader, advanced to the state competition in the Lewis and Clark Regional Young Authors Extravaganza.

45 Years Ago- 1979

Lisa Kramer and Robert Durham announced their engagement. Mr. & Mrs. Joseph Soukup celebrated their 50th Wedding Anniversary. Burton Andersh enlisted in the U.S. Armed Force’s Delayed Enlistment Program. A fullsized Mercury Marquis could be purchased for $5190.

60 Years Ago – 1964

Wagner Teachers, Mae Eitemiller, Evelyn Rueb and Bertille Carr completed a modern math course at South State Teachers College. Deputy Bill McCabe was honored at a retirement party. McCabe spent 21 years in law enforcement in Charles-Mix County. Attorney General Frank Farrar was the guest speaker at the Chamber of Commerce banquet. June Nedved was honored at a miscellaneous bridal shower. Maureen De-Noma and Francis Brink announced their engagement.

70 Years Ago – 1954

New Officers of the Dante Local was Robert Powers, president; Fred Stork, vice president; Mildred Holec, secretary/treasurer; Fern Powers, educational director; Florence Martin, recreational director; and Hattie Krsnak, publicity director. A son was born to Mr. and Mrs. Leo Payer. A daughter was born to Mr. and Mrs. Bartunek.

92 Years Ago – 1932

A Leap Year dance was scheduled for January 20th at the Z.C.B. Hall with Barta’s Orchestra playing Bohemian, popular, and old-time tunes. Admission was 50 cents for ladies and 25 cents for gentlemen. Harold Hawkey treated the members of Lawrence No. 2 to cupcakes in honor of his 7th birthday.
