Health updates of members: Roger and Betsy Wiltz still in Wisconsin. Betsy spent a few days in the hospital with a blood clot in her leg, but doing better. Dave Isebrands had knee replacement last week – having pain.

Becky B. introduced the program for Kelsey D.: Michael Burgeson, Resource Officer for the Wagner Community School.

Michael retired after 25 years with the Yankton Police Dept. He retired from the military three years ago. He attended SDSU for undergrad and then Black Hills State. He teaches Political Science and Criminal Justice at University of SD.

He commented that the Wagner Community School is one of the most secure and best schools he’s ever come across. It will be easy to put a plan in the school. The school has the best and friendliest staff he’s met. A communications plan will be updated in the school.

His overall plan is to get with ALL law enforcement in the surrounding areas and make one plan together – not three or four different plans.

#1 for Michael is the safety and security of the school. Then crime prevention: more drug education.

Drugs are a HUGE problem in U.S. Vaping is out of control.

Suicide awareness is needed. Education needed regarding mental health issues and awareness. He does teach mental awareness classes. Everyone needs to learn how to handle mental situations. Jail is NOT the place for people with mental health issues.

He is building a solid rapport with the kids: football, track/ running, etc.

He will be at the school until the end of the year and then they will evaluate the future plans for him and the school.

Michael was thanked for the program.

We closed in our usual fashion by standing and singing “My Country ‘Tis of Thee.”

Meeting adjourned.
