WCS GRAD CALVIN WRIGHT JR. DWU FOOTBALL PLAYER
Calvin Wright Jr. is a 2022 graduate of Wagner Community School (WCS). He is currently in his sophomore year studying criminal justice at Dakota Wesleyan University (DWU) where he plays college football. Calvin plays offensive line, left tackle and right tackle. Calvin chose DWU, because during his visit to the campus while still in high school, he loved the environment and the feeling that the campus gave him. The football coaching staff made a huge difference in making this the college for Calvin. The coaches made him feel that they really wanted him to be a part of their program, making it easy for Calvin to commit to DWU.
His college experience has been very positive. Calvin is enjoying meeting new people and competing at the next level in football. The competition at the college level is different than in high school. Everyone is talented and has the same strength. The only way to beat an opponent is by using consistent technique. His favorite aspect of being a part of the DWU football team is that they are like a family, a group of brothers. Calvin knows if he ever needs anything that all he has to do is ask and any number of his teammates will be there to help him.
One thing Calvin misses about being at WCS is his old friends and being able to spend time with them every day. Calvin’s advice to anyone thinking about playing college football would be if you have the opportunity after high school to play, then go for it. It is a chance to do something that not many people have the opportunity to do. He would also tell them that when playing to make sure to embrace everything, even the tiring and sore days.
Calvin is the son of Calvin and Mona Wright of Wagner. He is the grandson of Tony Wright, Winfred Ashes and Keny Ashes. The DWU Tigers are currently 5-1 on the season with three home games left. Calvin would love to see some friendly Wagner community members cheering him and the team on at any of the upcoming games.
