Charles Mix County Sheriff Randy Thaler would like to remind campers to lock their vehicles and property and to keep property out of sight as much as possible especially during the night hours while camping after a recent incidents.
On July 19th around 4 am, the Charles Mix County Sheriff's Office received a report of a White pickup in the North Point Campground with several occupants that were completing criminal entry of motor vehicles and stealing items.
Around 0415, Deputies observed the White Pickup by Lake Andes and attempted to stop the vehicle. The vehicle did not stop which resulted in a pursuit through Lake Andes. The vehicle turned into the Lake Andes Tribal Housing at a high rate of speed and struck a Tribal Officer Vehicle head on. The pickup rolled onto its side from the collision. At least three occupants fled from the vehicle and one juvenile was taken into custody.
The white pickup was discovered to have been stolen within Lake Andes earlier in the evening. Not recovered from the stolen vehicle were numerous carpentry tools. A search of the pickup revealed numerous wallets and property taken from at least 6 different vehicles from the North Point Campground. 1 9mm pistol was stolen and not recovered.
The juvenile was taken into custody and transported to the Juvenile Detention Center in Sioux Falls. This incident is believed to be connected to a similar incident that occurred in the North Point Campground a week earlier. During the incident 2 pistols were stolen from a vehicle in the campground.
