WAGNER TRACK RESULTS

By
Coach Matt Slaba

Two weekends ago, on May

5-6, Wagner took three athletes to compete in the Howard Wood Dakota Relays. Ashlyn Koupal competed in the high jump, Jhett Breen in the 300 hurdles, and Emma Yost in both the shot put and discus. This is the premier event in the state of South Dakota as there are no class distinctions in the individual events. Also, there are teams from Iowa, Minnesota, and North Dakota competing as well.

Ashlyn would compete first and she brought home third place with a leap of 5’4”, finishing behind Audrey Nelson of Madison who went 5’6”. Nelson will no doubt be a top opponent at the state meet as well as she and Ashlyn will both be competing in the class A division there.

Emma Yost threw the shot put on the first day just hours after squatting behind the plate for seven innings in a softball game in Beresford. Emma would end up in 28th place overall with a heave of 35’ 7 ¼”.

The next morning Emma would throw the discus 117’ 6”, which was the 19th best throw at the meet.

Jhett Breen would run his race on Saturday, also. Jhett came ready to go as he set a new personal record running a time of 42.35 seconds which was the

22nd best time.

On Tuesday, May 9, Parkston hosted the Southeast South Dakota Conference track and field meet.

8. Scotland 10 This will be the final week of track and field before the state meet which will be held May 25-27 in Sioux Falls. A few individuals will be competing in Alexandria this Monday, May 15. Then the region track meet will be on the 18th, also in Alexandria. This will be the last chance for these athletes to better their times, heights, and distances. Like last year, to make it to the state meet you need to be in the top 24 in your class. Here is Wagner’s outlook as far as who will be competing in what at this meet. Locks to make it: Ashlyn Koupal is tied for first in the high jump as she has cleared 5’6” on the year. Emma Yost is sitting 5th in the discus and 6th in the shot put with throws of 127’ 2” and 39’ 2”, respectively. Jhett Breen has the 7th best time in the 300 hurdles at 42.35. Karstyn Lhotak is tied for the 14th spot in pole vault with a mark of 11’

7”. Kya Kjeldgaard is also tied for 14th with her leap of 4’11”in the high jump. Another athlete sitting in the 14th spot is Matt Link. He has a long jump of 20’

6 ¼”. Shalayne Nagel is in 15th place in the 200 meters with a time of 27.02. There are others who are in the neighborhood of making it. The girls medley relay is currently hanging on to the 24th and final spot with a time of 4:41.69. Nagel is in the 29th spot in the 100 meter dash with a time of 13.14. Link is 27th in that same event with a time of 11.48. Jackson Rolston is in 29th place in the 110 hurdles with a time of 17.39. Braxton Knudsen is sitting in the 28th spot in the discus with a mark of 128’ 1” and Shea Kjeldgaard is tied for 27th place in the high jump with a best of 5’ 9”.
