WAGNER TEENERS VS FREEMAN

By
Coach Matt Slaba

On Monday, June 10, Wagner’s Post 7319 VFW Teener teams went to Freeman to play a pair of games.

The 14U team dropped the opening contest by a score of 12-3. This one started off well enough as Wagner plated three runs in the top of the 1st inning. Edward Ulrich reached on an error which was followed by a Colton Zephier walk. Dominic Doom would then single home Ulrich and Trasin Dilts doubled to left center to plate courtesy runner Ethan Gabel and Doom. And that was really all the offense Wagner would muster aside from one Steven Peters single and a couple of walks.

The pitching side of things left much to be desired as Wagner’s hurlers had a tough time finding the strike zone as the quartet of Ulrich, Kingston Brunelle, Brannon Bruguier, and Avery Medicine Bear combined to issue 16 free passes for the game as well as giving up six hits.

The nightcap would have the Wagner faithful leaving with a little better taste in their mouths as some strong pitching and defense would lead the 16U team to a 5-2 victory.

The game was scoreless through four innings until Wagner got things going in the fifth. Ulrich and Frank Soukup would reach base via an infield single and a walk, respectively. Javian Pesicka would then battle back from an 0-2 count to lace a 3-2 pitch into the left center field gap for a two run double. Preston McFayden would score later in the inning after reaching on an error and scoring on a wild pitch.

Freeman would score a run in the bottom of the 6th on a walk and a double. A nice sliding catch in right field by Jamian Medicine Horn to end the inning prevented a second run from scoring.

Wagner tacked on a couple of insurance runs in the top of the 7th inning. With one out, Soukup singled and advanced to second on an error. After a Pesicka foul out, McFayden came up with a big two-out RBI single and would eventually come around to score after a Malakai Segura single, a Colton Zephier hit-by-pitch, and a wild pitch.

Pesicka came on to close things out, giving up one unearned run. Segura started on the mound for Wagner and went 2.1 innings giving up zero runs on one hit while walking two and striking out one. McFayden would then come on for a solid 3.2 innings to earn the win. He allowed one earned run on one hit, one walk, and struck out one. Pesicka struck out one and allowed one hit in his inning of work.
