WAGNER TEENER'S BASEBALL RESULTS

By
Coach Matt Slaba

On Monday, June 12, Mt. Vernon-Plankinton came to Wagner for two teener games at Jack Hennies Field. Things did not go well for the 14U team as Wagner would fall by a score of 15-6. And the score was not as close as those numbers might indicate.

MVP would plate one run in the first and then tack on five more runs in the second off of starting pitcher Kingston Brunelle. He would last two plus innings giving up seven runs, two of those being earned. He would allow five hits while walking three, hitting one, and striking out two.

Cruise Koupal came on to pitch in the third inning. He allowed eight runs with only two of those being earned. He gave up four hits while walking, hitting, and striking out two batters each.

The pitchers didn’t do as bad as their lines sound as there were errors aplenty on the part of the Wagner defense, mentally more so than physically.

It was also a rather meek effort at the plate for Wagner as six of the first ten batters would go down on strikes in the first three innings. We were able to draw a few walks in the third inning and then Trasin Dilts came through as he lined a twoout triple into the left-center field gap with the bases loaded to drive in three runs.

Weston Bierma had the only other hit for Wagner as he would single home AJ Kotab who had reached on a hit by pitch.

In the nightcap, Wagner’s 16U squad would also come up on the wrong end of a 5-1 score.

Brady Cournoyer was the staring pitcher for Wagner and he pitched quite well. He went 4.1 innings and allowed three unearned runs on four hits while walking two, hitting two, and striking out four.

Frank Soukup made his season debut on the mound as he finished the game. He would give up two unearned runs on two hits while walking one, hitting one, and striking out two.

Brady Cournoyer, Joey Cournoyer, and Preston McFayden had the only hits for Wagner with Brady’s hit being an RBI single.

On Wednesday, June 14, Wagner’s teeners traveled to Wessington Springs for two games.

Steven Peters was the starting pitcher for Wagner and he went two innings giving up zero runs on one hit while striking out three, walking one and hitting a batter.

Edward Ulrich would then come on to pitch the final two frames. He struck out the three batters he faced in his first inning. He did give up one unearned run in the fourth inning.

There was a lot going on at the plate for Wagner in this game as we scored 23 runs to just one for the host team. Peters, Kingston Brunelle, Trasin Dilts, Brannon Bruguier, Dominic Doom, AJ Kotab, and Jamian Medicine Horn would all have multiple hits in the game. Ulrich, Avery Medicine Bear, and Gavin Tjeerdsma would also collect one hit.

Brunelle would score four times in the game while Peters, Bruguier, and Doom would each score three times.

The 16U team would then take the field. A good first inning set the tone for this one as Wagner plated five runs in the top of the first and would not look back from there as they went on to a 17-3 victory.

Wagner was led offensively by Brady Cournoyer who had two hits and four RBI. Not far behind was Frank Soukup who had two hits and three RBI and Landon Mudder, who collected two hits and had two RBI. Landon also did a steady job behind the plate as he made his season debut back there. Javian Pesicka, Carter Cournoyer, and Joey Cournoyer would each collect a hit with each Cournoyer driving in one. Carter and Joey reached base all four times and scored four and three runs, respectively. Edward Ulrich would also drive in two runs with a bases loaded walk and a bases loaded hit by pitch.

Preston McFayden did all the work on the mound in this one as he would earn the win by pitching all four innings. He allowed three earned runs on three hits while walking three and struck out nine.

This past weekend, June 17-18, Wagner’s 14U teeners traveled to Winner to partake in their annual tournament.

Wagner started off against Winner. Javian Pesicka got the start on the mound and pitched five innings. He gave up six runs, two of which were earned, on four hits while walking one and striking out 13.

Steven Peters finished the game by pitching the last inning. He gave up no runs on one hit while striking out one batter.

We would collect only four hits in this game. Two of them were by Jamian Medicine Horn as he also knocked in two runs with those hits. Trasin Dilts had a two run double and Beau Otte added an infield single. Cruise Koupal drove in two runs, one with a perfectly executed suicide squeeze bunt.

Although we only collected those four hits, 15 walks and four hit batsman led to 14 runs as we came out on top with 14-6 victory.

In the second game Wagner would face Platte-Geddes. After two scoreless innings the visitors would score one run on three hits off of Peters, who was the starting pitcher.

Wagner answered back in the top of the 4th with an unearned run as Medicine Horn would score after a walk, botched pick-off attempt, and a wild pitch.

Platte-Geddes came right back in the bottom half of the inning as they utilized five walks and two hits to score four runs.

Wagner would answer with one run in the top of the 5th as courtesy runner Weston Bierma scored on a balk.

Then in the last inning, down by three, we answered and tied the game. With two outs and no one on, Peters worked a walk and Dilts would do the same. Koupal then came through with a double to score one. Trey Segura would then single to drive in two and tie the score.

Platte-Geddes would go down without scoring in the bottom of the inning and we were off to extras. Wagner would plate two runs in their turn with RBI singles from Kingston Brunelle and Avery Medicine Bear. Unfortunately, we were not able to keep P-G from scoring three as we would fall in the semi-final game by a score of 8-7.

Peters, Koupal, Segura, Brunelle, Medicine Bear, Otte, and Dominic Doom each had one hit in this game.

Peters started the game and went three innings giving up three earned runs on three hits while walking five and striking out one. Edward Ulrich then came on to relieve. He lasted 2/3 of an inning and gave up two earned runs on one hit while walking three and striking out one. Medicine Horn then came on and finished the game. He allowed three runs, one of which was earned, on three hits while walking one.

The final game of the tournament pitted us against Parkston. It was three clean innings by both teams. Cruise Koupal started and pitched three very efficient innings as he used 33 pitches and got some solid defense to assist him.

Then there was the 4th inning. After retiring two of the first three batters he faced, things came undone. A single, walk, and two hit batsmen ended the day for Cruise. He ended up going 3.2 innings and allowed five runs on three hits while walking one, hitting two, and striking out two.

Things didn’t get much better form there as Brunelle would come on to relieve and could not get the last out, though an error in the outfield did not help his cause. He would give up five unearned runs on three hits, walking one. Segura then came on to get the final out.

Just like that, a 0-0 defensive battle turned into a 10-0 victory for Parkston.

Offensively for Wagner, Segura doubled and Medicine Bear singled for the only two Wagner hits.
