WAGNER QUIZ BOWL EARNS 5TH PLACE AND $100 FOR WAGNER SCHOOL
The Wagner Quiz Bowl team earned fifth place and won $100 for its school by competing in the quiz bowl finals hosted by Q107.3 FM Radio and Nedved Media Saturday, Jan. 12, at the Pepsi Cola Theater in Mitchell. Team members representing Wagner Saturday included Haley Drapeaux, team captain; Rose Eitemiller, Malcolm Janis and Kallen Kafka. Team member Michelle Soukup was unable to attend Saturday’s competition, but is also part of the team. Wagner’s team coach is Renee Van Der Werff. The Wagner High School Quiz Bowl Team advanced to the finals after working their way through a 32 team double-elimination radio station podcast bracket during the fall semester. During the school year, the team garnered a 3-2 win against White Lake in its opening round, a 4-3 win against Burke in its second round and a 3-1 win versus Winner in its third round. Recordings of these matches can be found on the Q107.3 Radio Website. The top eight teams were invited to play at the live competition Saturday. Wagner was one of the four teams who entered Saturday’s competition with no losses, which paired them against McCook Central in the opening round (who eventually went on to win the tournament) and Huron (who eventually took second). Other teams making it to the finals included Avon, Winner, Menno, Freeman and Gregory. Every team who advanced to Saturday’s competition earned prize money for their school, ranging from $100 for fifth through eighth places to $1,000 for first place. Sponsors of the Wagner Quiz Bowl matches throughout the season have included Charles Mix Electric and Poet Biorefining of Mitchell, and all tournament sponsors included Mitchell Technical Institute, Walmart, Coborn’s Superstore of Mitchell, Avera Health Central Office and Poet Biorefining.
