Wagner girls’ golf team kicks off their season on Friday, April 19th with Gregory at the Gregory Golf Course starting at 10 a.m. This year’s team is coached by Riley Kirwan. Riley has been coaching golf at Wagner for the past 11 years with a combined 19 years total in coaching.
This year’s team has some new comers. The seniors are Aubrey Medricky and McKenzie Fuchs. The solo junior is Cadee Nelson and sophomore is Addison Cuka.
The team’s goal this year is to qualify at least one girl on the team for the state golf tournament. Leadership this season will come from senior, Aubrey Medricky, who returns to the team with the most experience. Coach Kirwan will look to her to be the leader and help with the new team members.
The toughest meets this season will be Burke and Platte. They are always tough competition during regular season competition. Winner and Parkston will also be the favored to win in the regions. As the head coach, Kirwan is looking forward to being able to teach the game of golf to kids who do not have much experience with the game. Kirwan does have a philosophy when it comes to building both a team and program for Wagner. First of all, good numbers are always a must. This is important because it helps keep practice competitive for all the golfers. Putting a lot of time in during the offseason is also important when it comes to golf. Since it is such a mental sport, constantly preparing and talking kids through the wide variety of different situations they could be in is also critical.
Best of luck to the Lady Raider golf team on their season!
