The Wagner Red Raiders softball team hosted the Beresford Lady Watchdogs on Monday, April 10th for their home opener. It was a beautiful day to showcase their new complex.
The first score on the board was brought in by Lydia Yost. She walked and stole her way around the bases to tie up the game at 1-1 in the bottom of the first. Sydney Cournoyer also walked, and Rayvn Medricky singled on a fly ball to second base but were left on base.
A few errors in the top of the 3rd gave Beresford the lead by two, but L. Yost’s single to center a few steals and S. Cournoyer’s hard ground ball to center brought them back to within one. A few more singles and steals by L. Yost and S.
Cournoyer tied the game in the bottom of the 7th bringing us to an extra inning.
The Wagner Red Raiders fought the whole game but suffered a 5-3 loss against the Beresford Lady Watchdogs.
Wagner’s defense played a good game with all girls adding to the mix. L. Yost was in the circle for Wagner, walking only four and striking out thirteen. Emma Yost was behind the plate letting nothing past her and throwing out one at second. Libby Kotab, Brylie Link, and S. Cournoyer all had outs in the field while Braxton Nedved and Rayvn Medricky had caught some flies in the outfield.
The Wagner Junior Varsity started the first inning off strong scoring 4. Libby Kotab, SheaLee Turner, and Hannah Holzbauer were all walked. Mara Wright addfirst a nice single to left field and Braxton Nedved hit a single to short stop. H. Holzbauer scored on a nice steal into home.
Brylie Link reached 1st on a drop third strike and stole her way around to bring the score to 5-10, but it just wasn’t enough to catch up to the Beresford Lady Watchdogs. L. Kotab, M. Wright, and Kayden Zephier all got some pitching in and did great in the circle. The girls played well and adapted to the position and lineup changes.
The Red Raiders continue action in Winner for a Varsity double header on Thursday, April 13th with the first game starting at 5pm. They will also be playing in the Avon Tournament on Saturday, April 15th starting at 10am.
