The Wagner Athletic Hall of Fame Committee announced its 2nd Class to be inducted in January. Leading this class is Travis Slaba, four-time State Champion in Wrestling. He was a member of the 1992 and 1994 Wagner State Wrestling Championship Teams. Travis was named to the High School National Wrestling All-American Team. Travis also participated in Football and Track and graduated from Wagner Community School in 1995. He participated in the wrestling program at the University of Nebraska.

1984 graduate, Darryl Deurmier, was a 4-year letter winner in Football. He was an All-State running back his senior year as well as All-Conference his junior and senior years. As a junior, Darryl’s team won the State Class 11B Championship and his senior year the team was defeated in the championship game. Darryl was a 5-year letter winner in Wrestling. He was a 3-time Conference Champion and wrestled in the state meet his last three years. He placed second is junior year and 3rd his senior year. Darryl was a 4-year letter winner in Track. At one point, Darryl held the school’s record in pole vault and placed 4th place his senior year. Darryl was a 4-year letter winner in Football and Track at Dakota Wesleyan University.

1988 graduate Susan Meinke (McEntee), was a 4-year letter winner in Basketball and Track and was instrumental in getting Volleyball started at Wagner. Susan was named to the All-State Basketball Team in 1987 making her the first female athlete from Wagner to be named to an all-state team. She was also a 3-year All-Conference Player. In 1988 in Track she set Wagner Track Records in 6 different events and 3 of those school records still hold today. Susan went on to play basketball at the University of South Dakota.

1987 graduate Mieka Hanna (Bich), was a 5-year letter winner in Track and Gymnastics as well as a 2-year letter winner in basketball. Mieka participated at the State Track Meet five years coming away with 10 State Track Meet medals. She excelled in the 100M Hurdles (2nd, 3rd and 6th places) and High Jump (placing 2nd, 3rd and 5th places. She also placed in the 300M Hurdles as well as on the 4 x 400M Relay. Mieka participated all 5 years at the State Gymnastics Meet. In 1987, Mieka was the Balance Beam State Champion also placed 2nd and 3rd her junior and sophomore years. She also placed 4th place in the Floor event her senior year. The 1983 and 1986 Gymnastic Teams placed 2nd at the state meet with the help of Mieka.

Howard Bich has been selected to the WCS Athletic Hall of Fame as a Coach. Coach Bich taught and coached for 40 years with his last 32 being at Wagner. Coach Bich finished his season with more than 100 track championships. Coach Bich also won more than 275 basketball games. Currently Coach Bich is serving as the Executive Director for the South Dakota Senior Games.

Wagner Athletic Hall of Fame is also honoring the 1982 Football Team that defeated Hamlin 13-7 in overtime to win the State Class 11B Championship.
