WAGNER CROSS COUNTRY RUNNERS ATTEND PICKSTOWN RUNNING CAMP

The humidity and fog were no match for the 30+ Cross Country Runners attending the Pickstown Running Camp. The Morning of June 25th was a sticky one yet, these runners all took on the 3 mile run that morning with grace. That is what runners do; they run when they want to and when they need to, no matter the weather.

The camp was held June 25, 26, and 27 at the Knotheads meeting room, Randall Creek Campground, and the Pickstown City Park. The camp started every day with a distance run ranging from 3-5 miles. Building a great foundation for running is an essential part of preparing for their Cross Country season. Many of the runners at camp were brand new to this sport and were able to experience the ability to run, while listening to their bodies and walking when needed. Listening to your body, and goal setting were another element that was taught at this camp. Taking care to know how to run and what type of goals to set is a great start to running.

Ryan Chase, the Cross Country Coach of Dakota Wesleyan spoke to the campers about how important it is to surround yourself with positive people. He stressed to the kids that in order to be successful, they need to surround themselves with successful people. That is, hanging out with other people who lift you up and make you a better person. It is important for runners to be that person for others as well, especially when running gets tough. Running is truly a mental sport and Ericka Kotab, of Flourish and Fettle Yoga, did a great job with presenting to the campers how they also need to look inside to be successful. Yoga is a great practice in helping runners to focus and find balance.

Having fun is also an important part of running. “Enjoy the view” is a great motto in running. While running in Pickstown, the runners got to experience the beautiful scenic trails in there, as well as the Scenic River Hills Run. Frisbee Golf was enjoyed by all down at Randall Creek, with Jenga, Pool Tables, and dart boards in Knotheads.

On the final day of camp, a 3 mile fun-run was held with Grady Bartunek winning for the male division and Beatriz Hernandez Lucas winning for the female division. Following the fun run, Sydney Dvorak gave an enlightening talk on diet and nutrition for runners. Running isn’t just about running; it involves healthy habits, positive people, and taking a look inside yourself, especially when times get tough.

We would like to thank Larry Lucas for putting on another great running camp. It is wonderful to have this so close to home. The knowledge brought to all runners at this camp is truly invaluable.
