WAGNER COMMUNITY SCHOOL STUDENTS ATTEND SCRUB CAMP

By

The Wagner Community School had four high school students and school prevention nurse, Kelly Cimpl, attend Scrub Camp on October 15th. Scrub Camp was sponsored by the Area Health Education Center (AHEC) and held in Yankton at the Physician’s Pavilion. The camp was open to any high school student who is interested in a career in the medical field. The goal of this camp is to allow students the opportunity to look at different careers and areas that the medical field has to offer. Camps like this one allow students who are curious about future careers in the medical field to take part in some hands-on training to aid in preparing them to decide what areas appeal the most to them. The camp featured a wide range of medical careers ranging from direct patient care to administrative duties and everything in between.

The Scrub Camp featured seven stations that the students rotated through for different experiences. The stations included Health Information Management, Dietetics, Dental Hygiene, Speech/Language, Pathology, Telehealth, Exercise and Strength Conditioning, and a MRSA case study. Although all of the stations were interesting, the students really seemed to enjoy the Telehealth and the MRSA case study stations the best. At the MRSA case study station, the students were able to create a “MRSA infection” on one another to demonstrate what a sore looks like. For the telehealth station, the Wagner students volunteered to participate in a segment where they were able to see the “doctor” on one screen and the “nurse” and “patient” on the other.
