WAGNER AT AVON RELAYS

By
Coach Matt Slaba

On Tuesday, April 18, Wagner traveled to Tyndall for the Jim Flevares Relays. Wagner’s girls would finish fifth out of nine teams while the boys would finish sixth.

Ashlyn Koupal would win the high jump as she would go 5’4” to claim the title.

Emma Yost would lead the girls team as she won both the shot put and the discus (not to mention running an inspiring third leg in the weightman’s relay). Emma has been creeping up on the school record for the shot put, coming up just short of the mark at the Wagner Relays. On this day she would toss the shot 38’ 10”, just under six inches short of the record.

While Emma has been closest to the school record in the shot, the discus record has certainly been within striking distance as well. A throw of 116’ 9” in Wagner put her approximately ten feet away.

After she had completed the shot Emma was left a little disappointed despite the fact that she did claim first place. She would decide to use that disappointment as motivation as she made her way into the discus cage. At this meet, each thrower would get four attempts. After her third attempt she was sitting in third place, having yet to throw farther than 115 feet. There was some competition at this meet, including some old Avon Pirate acquaintances, which definitely helped her stay focused and determined as the contest wore on.

In throwing events, frequently an athlete will get their farthest throw with their first throw. Of course, that is not always the case, but Yost says that is typical for her. Now she was down to her final attempt. When asked what her mindset was going into that last throw she simply said, “I told myself I’m not losing!” Not only did she not lose, she would set a new school record with a throw of 127’

2”, breaking Carol Stastny’s 1989 mark of 126’ 3 ½”.

She noted that it felt good out of her hand but she was not aware at the time that it was a new school record. Upon being told that it was, in fact, a new school record, a little fist pump and smile let you know that her hard work and determination had paid off. Congratulations Emma!
