VOIGT CHRISTMAS TRADITION CONTINUES

By
Alyssa Mathis
Driving along highway 50 going to or from Avon, one may have noticed a heartwarming brightly lit nativity scene on the front of the barn at the residence of Paul and Tracy Voigt. This nativity scene has been a part of an annual tradition that began with Paul’s dad, Vert. Vert Voigt started decorating the barn with the nativity scene in the early 1980s. He began decorating the year that the characters were available for sale. Vert liked the old-style barn with big red doors and the decorations fit with that style. Throughout the years, the nativity scene basics have stayed the same with a few small changes like the adding or taking away of little decorations such as angels or bells. Paul has found that it is better for the decorations to be taken down after the holidays each year instead of leaving them up all year long. He is able to put the nativity scene decorations up in just a couple of hours. It helps that Paul has past pictures to look at and nails to guide him on where things are to be placed. Vert Voigt passed away in May of 2022, but his son Paul plans to continue his father’s legacy by putting up the nativity scene every holiday season. Vert was a man who was strong in his faith and valued remembering the true meaning of Christmas. His family plans to continue to share that with the community and anyone who passes by
