USD HOSTS STUDENTS INTERESTED IN TEACHING
Ms. Saddi Wynia and Mr. Ronald Swier, Avon School counselors, recently took 9-12 students interested in the education field on September 27, 2021 to a teacher’s education visit at the University of South Dakota in Vermillion.
Their day began with a free t-shirt and breakfast. Then, they got to listen to a couple of guest speakers in the education program explaining what USD has to offer. Next, they went into Dezel Hall, the education building. They were shown a PowerPoint that outlined the classes students should be taking each year of college, and the extracurricular things college kids can do.
They also got to play a Kahoot game that involved the students guessing facts about one of their guest speakers. This guest speaker had a mobile iPad on wheels that moved around the room as if a student was present. Then any student who is missing could control this moving iPad from home with their phone.
After a full morning, the students were given a free Chick-fil-a meal. After everyone was done eating, the students met up in another room with new student teachers. Attendees were able to ask student teachers about their good and bad experiences.
Towards the end, the USD hosts did a fun drawing that included a prize...a free USD blender bottle. On each student's name tag was a number. If your number was drawn you won. The two lucky winners from Avon were Tiffany Pelton and Caleb Wallinga.
Finally, the day’s events concluded with a college tour.
