Senior Gannon Knebel’s persistence paid off in a big way Saturday, February 28, in Sioux Falls.

Competing in the 215-pound weight class, the Wagner Raider capped an undefeated season by winning the state championship after finishing as runner-up the past two years. This time, Knebel left no doubt, earning his long-awaited spot at the top of the podium.

After falling just short in previous seasons, Knebel entered this year’s tournament determined to finish the job. His hard work and experience showed as he battled through the bracket to secure the title and complete a perfect season.

In addition to his state championship, Knebel was also honored with the John W. Konechne Wrestling Scholarship Award. The annual scholarship is presented to a top senior wrestler and recognizes excellence, dedication and success at the state level.

Knebel’s championship performance and scholarship recognition mark a memorable finish to an outstanding high school wrestling career for the Raider senior.

The Wagner Raiders were well represented at the SDHSAA Boys State Wrestling Championships, with several wrestlers competing against the best in Class B.

Leading the way was senior Gannon Knebel at 215 pounds. Knebel capped off his undefeated 37-0 season in dominant fashion, claiming the state championship and scoring 28.5 team points for the Raiders. He opened the tournament with a fall in just 34 seconds over Matthew Angiolelli of Webster Area. Knebel continued his commanding run with technical falls over Xavier Yount of Tri-Valley in the quarterfinals and Gabriel Martian of Howard in the semifinals. In the championship match, Knebel sealed the title with another technical fall, defeating Chase Adam of Canton, 17-1.

At 113 pounds, Frank Krcil turned in a strong performance, finishing fifth and contributing 10.5 team points. Krcil opened with a 5-3 decision over Tel Elshere of New Underwood before falling in the quarterfinal round. Battling back through the consolation bracket, he earned wins over Michael Becker of Howard and Judd Hansen of Winner. After a setback in the consolation semifinals, Krcil closed his tournament on a high note with a 12-5 decision over Maddon Odland of Redfield to secure fifth place.

Hunter Wiechmann competed at 150 pounds and scored one team point. After dropping a narrow 4-3 decision in the opening round, Wiechmann rebounded with a 1-0 victory over Lyle Noel of Bennett County in the consolation bracket before being eliminated in another tight 1-0 match.

At 175 pounds, Thane Tjeerdsma served as an alternate for the Raiders. The state tournament marked a strong finish to the season for Wagner, highlighted by Knebel’s championship performance and Krcil’s podium finish.
