TWO VIPS VISIT AVON LIBRARY

Two VIPs (Very Important Pigs) visited Avon Public Library’s final Summer Reading Program (SRP) session on July 24th, much to the delight of the 44 children who attended. The Yorkshire barrow named Oscar and cross bred gilt named Bo Peep were brought to Avon by Landon and Rilyn Thury, who let the youngsters not just pet the pigs, but also try their hand at showing pigs.
The library’s 2023 SRP theme was “Are You A Farm Safety Hero?” and each session focused on various aspects TWO VIPS VISIT AVON LIBRARY of farming, equipment, and livestock. The final session was ‘no boar’ as participants watched an animated reading of Three Little Pigs, drank hog slop (Ginger Ale & Sherbet), ate ham and cheese crackers, and made pig face crafts.
A drawing was held for prizes. Winners of $30 Bomgaar’s gift cards were: Kyzleigh Metzger, Lydia Krcil, and Avery Beeson. Five more children had their numbers drawn and got to select books and other prizes from the treasure chest.
SRP participants and library patrons are also very busy reading books for the library’s Top Reader Program. Final book lists are to be turned in at the library by August 7th. Library staff and Board members will then tally the lists and winners will be announced. A $60 Bomgaar’s gift card will be awarded to the top reader in each of four age categories: 0-7, 8-11, 12-17, and 18+.
SRP participants are reminded to finish up their farm safety posters and Young Author books on (farm safety or any other topic) by August 15th. There will be additional prizes for the best posters and books.
