TRICK OR TREAT TO EAT
Halloween costumes, the door bell ringing every few minutes and lots of young people saying “Trick or Treat”, will be the order of the night this Halloween Night. With this night comes lots of excitement, lots costumes, lots of children running up and down the street with their parents trying to keep up and very little chance to make supper. All of this fun and basically very little real food for supper, that does not include candy, causes parents to feel somewhat frustrated. Not an easy task! The sugar over load will keep some children up all night and help make for a less productive school day the next day unless a good plan is developed.
The choice of “Trick or Treat or Eat” does not have to be the only option on Halloween night. Parents and guardians alike can rest assured that having a good supper is possible, if they plan their night right. This is because a special “Community Supper” is being held right on main street following the business “Trick or Treat” activity. Trick or treaters can make all their business trick or treating stops on main street and then go right to the Wagner Theater community room for supper, which will be made specifically for the trick or treaters and their families. Elders wanting to see all of the young people in their costumes are also encouraged to attend as well so they can get in on the fun as well.
This special “Community Supper” is being held at the Wagner Theater and will feature a BBQ sandwich, baked beans, chips, a salad and a drink and the cost is “Free”. However, it is hoped that everyone attending will choose to make a “Free Will Offering” in exchange for the meal. The money raised will be given to the Boys and Girls Club to help them with their programming activities. Parents, their children and elders in the community are encouraged to attend and enjoy the meal before they go on their way to possibly more “Trick or Treating”.
This supper has been offered for the past three years and was first organized to help make life easier for families on this busy night. In the beginning, it was expected that about 150 children and parents might attend. However, the word spread and the supper numbers quickly grew. Last year about 325 people came through the door to eat supper. This year we are preparing food to feed 350 people. A total of 12 volunteers are needed to help keep the line moving, serve the food and help parents with their children’s plates. Elders will also be helped as needed so they can also get in on the fun. The supper is being provided by several caring individuals in the community. The doors will open at 4:30 and food will be served until the food is gone, so plan accordingly. Remember, take your children to the businesses involved with the “Trick or Treat Project” and then stop to “Eat” and don’t forget to leave a “Free Will Offering” for the Boys and Girls Club as you leave. Also remember, there is school the next day! See you there!
