Terran Talsma attended and competed in the steer wrestling event at the Junior World Finals in Las Vegas on December 12th through the 16th. His best overall time was 6.4 seconds (an average of his five times), which was good, but did not earn Terran a place at the Junior World Finals. He competed against 45 of the best steer wrestlers in the world. Although he did not place, it did not stop Terran from having an amazing and memorable experience at the event.
The best part of his experience was being the only steer wrestler who was able to throw down steer #98. In many ways it comes down to the luck of the draw. Each wrestler, wrestled one steer a day for the five-day competition and was assigned a steer through a random draw system. Terran was one of two participants from South Dakota to steer wrestle at this event.
Terran was accompanied by his whole family, his friend, Trace Pelton, and his horse Rocket. Rocket is the horse that Terran qualified for the National Finals on in Gillette, Wyoming. Terran’s dad, Ty, was able to haze for Terran at the Junior World Finals competition. A hazer is another horse mounted rider that gallops his horse along the right side of the steer to keep it from veering away from the steer wrestler.
Terran credits his father, Ty, for helping him to become the steer wrestler he is today. His dad has helped him every step of the way. To be a good steer wrestler, it takes an endless amount of trying and mental toughness. To be good at the event, one has to always be willing to never give up. Terran’s advice to other steer wrestlers or anyone interested in steer wrestling is to work hard every day both in your mind and in the arena.
After high school, Terran plans to continue to participate in rodeos and the steer wrestling events. Terran would like to thank his family for all their support and a big thank you to Tom Carne for the coaching alongside of his dad. Finally, he would like to thank Ote Berry for putting on the steer wrestling competition at the Junior World Finals.
Congratulations Terran on the end of a great rodeo season and representing Avon and South Dakota at the Junior World Finals.
