On Wednesday, June 19, Wagner’s Post 7319 VFW 14U and 16U teeners hosted Parkston. The 14U team struggled to hit and field the ball in this contest as they would fall to the visitors by a score of 12-0. Colton Zephier started on the mound and gave up eight runs, five earned, on seven hits and two walks while striking out two in three innings of work. Landon Ronfeldt came on to pitch the final two frames. He did a nice job of filling up the strike zone but he was also plagued by some porous Wagner defense as all four runs allowed were unearned. He allowed two hits while walking one and hitting two Parkston batters.
Beau Otte collected the only Wagner hit. Apollo Doney walked and Brannon Bruguier was hit by a pitch.
It looked like the 16U game would be a quick one as it was scoreless through four innings. Parkston then used two walks, two errors, and two singles to plate four runs in the fifth inning.
Wagner answered back in their runs, coming back with six runs. They took advantage of six walks and two hits to plate those runs.
The score remained 6-4 heading into the seventh inning but Wagner couldn’t close it out as Parkston tied things up with a single and two doubles.
The score would stay tied at six until the bottom of the 9th. Parkston walked the bases loaded and then Preston McFayden walked it off with a sharp single through a drawn in infield.
Wagner used four pitchers in this game, trying to keep everyone eligible to pitch in the Winner tournament this weekend. Brady Cournoyer started and went 3.2 innings. He gave up no runs on just two hits while striking out four and walking one. McFayden was next up. He tossed one inning, giving up four runs, two earned, on two hits while walking two and striking out one. Frank Soukup followed McFayden. He went 2.1 innings. Frank allowed two earned runs on three hits, no walks, and he struck out four. Malakai Segura threw the two extra innings and did a nice job as he kept Parkston off the board, only allowing one free pass and striking out one.
At the plate for Wagner, Mc-Fayden collected two hits. Along with the game winner he also had a double. Soukup had one knock. He drove in a run and scored once. Cournoyer, Colton Zephier, and Paxton Kuhlman each had one hit as well. Kuhlman would score the game winning run after collecting a lead off walk.
