TEENERS SECURE TWO MORE WINS AT DOUBLEHEADER IN SALEM

On Monday, July 14, the 14U VFW Post 7319 teeners traveled to Salem for a double header and came home with two more wins under their belt as they beat the Cubs by scores of 7-4 and 13-7.

In the first game Jacob Kotab took to the mound. He pitched all five innings to earn the win. Three of the four Salem runs were unearned. Jacob allowed only three hits while also walking three and striking out two. Jacob also fielded his position well, ending up with five assists.

Tyler Ronfeldt led the way offensively as he collected two hits and two RBI. Jackson Woods, Mason Milk, and Connor Gabel all had a hit, a run scored, and an RBI. Ethan Gabel walked twice and scored twice while Alex Reiter walked twice and scored once. Kotab also had one hit.

The second game was a long one as there were a combined 22 walks and come out on top by a score of 4-3. We would get all four of our runs in the 2nd inning. The inning started with two singles by Carter Cournoyer and Ulrich. Hunter Loeffler and Malakai Segura each drew a walk, with Segura’s eWarning him an RBI. Octavian Kocer then did the same with his bases loaded walk. Javian Pesicka hit a groundball for an error that would plate both Loeffler and Segura.

Tabor wouldn’t go away as they held Wagner in check the rest of the way and added two runs in the 4th and one in the 5th to cut the lead to one. Things did get tense in the final inning as Tabor loaded the bases on two singles and a walk, but Carter Cournoyer would strike out the final batter to earn the save.

Wagner used four pitchers to get the win with Segura getting the start. He went two innings and gave up no ten hits. Fortunately, Wagner drew 15 of those walks enroute to scoring their 13 runs. Connor Gabel was the lead hit man as he had two singles and two runs scored to go along with one RBI. Tyler Ronfeldt had a hit and three runs scored. Woods knocked in one run with a single and scored twice. Austin DeVries had one hit and four RBI. Ethan Gabel, the only Wagner batter who didn’t draw a walk in this game, had a hit, an RBI, and a run scored. Cooper Gene Kuhlman walked twice and knocked in two.

Colton Zephier earned the win on the mound as he went 3.1 innings allowing all seven runs, three of which were earned, on three hits while walking six and striking out eight. DeVries then came on to toss the final 1.2 innings. He did not allow a run as Salem could only muster one hit and a walk against him. He did strike out two batters.

Joey Cournoyer was next. He gave up one unearned run on one hit and one hit batter while striking out one in one inning. Carter Cournoyer then came on to clean things up over the final two innings as he struck out five batters and allowed no runs on two hits and a walk.

Offensively, Ulrich had a two-hit night. He scored a run and drew a walk as well. Pesicka, Kocer, Carter Cournoyer, and Landon Mudder all had one hit.

The senior legion team will open its region playoffs Tuesday, July 22, at 6:00 in Platte as they play Scotland- Menno-Freeman-Canistota. The junior legion starts its playoff on July 28 at 2:00 in Tabor.
