TALSMA STARTS RODEO SEASON WITH ALL AROUND COWBOY TITLE

By
Alyssa Mathis
For Terran Talsma, summer means rodeo season and rodeo season means the thrill and challenge of competition. Talsma has a full summer of rodeoing as he competes in 4H rodeos, high school rodeos and other SDRA (South Dakota Rodeo Association). Events that Talsma is participating in this season are tie down, steer wrestling and team roping. He has competed in the Cuatro Crown in Geddes, the White River rodeo and will be competing at the regionals in two weeks before the state finals. At the Quatro Crown Rodeo, Talsma won the All-Around Cowboy title. This season at the two rodeos that he has competed at he and or his team has set multiple records in steer wrestling, calf roping and team roping. Terran’s goals for this season is to win the state title in the steer wrestling event and to qualify for Nationals in all three of his events. Even though those seem like lofty goals, Terran has been putting in the time and practice that it takes to achieve them. In order to get prepared for rodeos and the state finals, Terran has been practicing all day every day since school ended, and even during school would practice after school. Not only is it important that he physically practices at home as much as he can, but Terran also knows that rodeoing is a mental sport as well. Daily he goes over thousands of runs of each event in his head. For the steer wresting event, Terran’s go-to partner is his horse, Rocket. Fancy is the horse that Terran uses for both the team roping and tiedown events. Terran is looking forward to the upcoming regional, state finals and nationals’ rodeos that he will be competing in. He is really excited for the chance to win a state title. Being in a Professional Rodeo runs through Terran’s blood as that is what his dad did for most of his life and still does. Terran plans to continue the tradition and more than likely become a Professional Rodeo-er after he completes his business degree at Black Hills State University. He will also be playing football for the Yellowjackets. Terran’s proudest rodeo moment to date would be competing at the Fort Pierre SDRA Rodeo last July 4th. He won the steer wrestling event going up against some Professional Rodeo steer wrestlers and his dad. Congratulations Terran on your success thus far this season. Wishing you the best of luck in your upcoming rodeos. Photo by Barb Pechous Photography
