SWIM TEAM SEASON IN FULL SWING

The 2024 Avon swim team is coached by head coach, Becky Haenfler, and assistant coaches Macy Voigt, Landon Mudder and Jordyn Voigt. Becky has been the head coach of the team for the past five years. What she enjoys most about coaching the swim team, is getting to see the kids in the summer time and helping them work toward their swimming goals. Becky was a part of swim team when she was younger and then coached the swim team for several years in high school and college. When her own children decided that they wanted to be a part of Avon’s swim team, Becky wanted to be able to help where she was needed. There are several events that swim team members have the option to participate in including individual medley, backstroke, breaststroke, butterfly and freestyle. Members can also swim in a free relay or medley relay. In a single swim meet, a swimmer can participate in one individual medley, three individual stroke events and two relays. The Avon swim team has 58 kids out for the 2024 season. The swim team members range in age from four to 18. As there are a lot of swim team members, Coach Haenfler broke down the ages as follows: age six and under – 9 kids; age eight and under – 15 kids; 10 and under – 8 kids; age 11-12 – 9 kids; age 13-14 – 10 kids; age 15-16 – 4 kids; and age 17-18 – 4 kids. The only requirement to be a part of the swim team is that the child be a good listener and should be comfortable with the water. The team practices every weekday from 10 a.m. until 12:30 p.m. with four different practices broken up by age groups. Coach Haenfler’s team goals for the 2024 season are that as a team they want to do as well as they can at the upcoming league championships. The team is hopeful that they can place for a high point trophy. Another goal for the swim team is that the swimmers work hard, and that they do not shy away from putting in the extra work needed at practice and meets. As the head coach, Becky is most looking forward to watching the swimmers learn new things and see how much they improve over the course of the season. Last year’s team had eight swimmers from the swim team attend the Junior Olympics in Des Moines. It was a great experience for those able to attend. This 2024 season’s Junior Olympics will be held in Greensboro, North Carolina. Swimmers can qualify at the mid-season championships in O’Neill, NE that was June 22nd or at the league championships held at the end of the swim team season on July 17th and 18th. Through generous donations and well attended fundraisers, the swim team was able to raise approximately $4500 that was used to purchase new suits for all swimmers on the swim team. The swim team’s season is winding down. There will be two more swim meets in Avon on June 29th and July 3rd followed by the final regular swim meet of the season in Armour on July 10th before the league championships in Platte.
