STUDENTS PARTICIPATE IN POPPY POSTER CONTEST

By
Gracie Small

Avon students made poppy posters to be judged by the American-Legion Auxiliary. According to legion-aux.org, the red poppy is a nationally recognized symbol of sacrifice worn by Americans since World War I to honor those who served and died for our country in all wars. It reminds Americans of the sacrifices made by our veterans while protecting our freedoms. Poppy posters are a great way for students in grades 2-12 to get involved in the remembrance and honor of our veterans.

Poppy posters have become a tradition that both students and teachers enjoy. Fifth grade teacher Becky Haenfler said, “We did them while we were doing our testing. It was a nice project for them to work on during our testing time. It gave them a chance to be creative and to reflect on the importance of the topic.”

Requirements include an up to ten word slogan, a picture of the red Flanders Field Poppy, and a creative representation on an 11 x 14” poster board. A total of 115 students participated from Avon School.
