This past weekend, June 21-22, Wagner’s Post 11 Senior Legion boys took part in a tournament in Creighton, Nebraska, and came away with three wins.
In their first game they took on Albion. Carter Cournoyer would get the complete game victory as Wagner earned a 13-0 win. Carter gave up only one hit and walked no one and got 12 of the 15 outs by way of the strikeout.
At the dish, Wagner was led by Frank Soukup as he reached base in all four plate appearances. He collected two hits, including a double. He would also score twice and drive in two runs. Joey Cournoyer also collected two hits including a double. He would drive in one run and score twice. Hunter Loeffler and Edward Ulrich each doubled with Loeffler driving in two runs and Ulrich, three. Carter Cournoyer helped himself out with a hit, RBI, and run scored. Trasin Dilts, Landon Mudder, Octavian Kocer, and Malakai Segura all scored runs.
In the second game of the tournament, the opponent would be different but the score would be the same as Wagner defeated Creighton by a count of 13-0. Frank Soukup took to the mound in this one and pitched six scoreless frames. He walked four and allowed three hits while striking out 12 batters.
Ulrich had the big stick as he went 4 for 5 with a double, two runs scored and two RBI. Soukup and Loeffler each had two knocks with a double a piece. Soukup scored twice and drove in one while Loeffler scored once and drove in three. Joey and Carter Cournoyer each had a hit with Carter’s being a double. They each drove in two runs while Joey scored three times, and Carter scored twice. Landon Mudder also singled while Kocer drew two walks and scored twice. Dominic Doom drove one in on a ground out.
The final game of the tournament was not as easily attained, though it looked like it would be as Wagner jumped out to a 5-0 lead after two innings.
Soukup led off the game with an opposite field double and Ulrich followed that up with an RBI single. Joey Cournoyer then came up and singled as well. After a groundout advanced the runners, Segura singled to score a run and another run would score after an error.
In the 2nd inning Ulrich would once again drive in Soukup, who had reached on a fielder’s choice and Joey Cournoyer drove in Ulrich with a double.
Wakefield would bounce back in the third after Wagner had some trouble fielding and throwing bunted balls. They scored two unearned runs on one hit and two errors and would have scored more but for a diving catch on a sinking line drive by Mudder in left field. They would score two more in the 4th to cut Wagner’s lead to 5-4.
We would add to our lead in the 5th as Loeffler and Doom led off with back-to-back singles. Loeffler would end up scoring on a wild pitch and Dilts scored on an RBI groundout by Soukup.
Wakefield did not go quietly, however, as they added two more in the 6th after a big two out two run double by their leadoff hitter.
We got some insurance in the bottom of the inning as Segura drove in Carter Cournoyer who had doubled.
Wakefield led off the final inning with a single and then Joey Cournoyer, who had started the game, struck out the final batter he would face before reaching his pitch limit. Ulrich then came on to get the save. He only had to throw three pitches as Doom threw out the runner trying to steal second for the second out, and then two pitches later Ulrich got the strikeout to end the game.
Wagner’s bats were smoking hot in this game as we collected 14 hits. Joey Cournoyer had three hits, including a double, while Soukup, Ulrich, Segura, and Loeffler all had two with Ulrich and Segura driving in two runs each. Doom, Dilts, and Carter Cournoyer had one hit each as well.
After this weekend the Senior Legion record sits at 8-2.
